Why I Love Norfolk Island

16 May 2024

My first trip to Norfolk Island was in January 2015. As a child, I had always wanted to move from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island (just off the coast of South Australia) where I had spent many wonderful holidays since my childhood.

I eventually purchased my 5 acre waterfront allotment on Kangaroo Island in December 2013 and couldn’t wait to build my dream and forever home…….until I flew into Norfolk Island.

I remember in 2015 I had a window seat and we flew in over Kingston. I have travelled widely and seen much of the world, but as I flew into NI, despite my deep love of Kangaroo Island, I knew I was coming to the most beautiful place in the entire world. I had a great 8 days and still didn’t get to see and do all that Norfolk Island had on offer. I actually started to get very worried too, as I began to feel I had bought land on the wrong island!! As I left I vowed that I would return.

It took me 9 years, but to be fair, during that time, I had to sell my Adelaide home, relocate to Kangaroo Island, rent a property whilst my own home was being built (I ended up moving in with no doors, windows or even a kitchen). I set about building up Kangaroo Island Real Estate and then once reasonably established I started the long and stressful process of selling my Adelaide business. Then of course in December 2019 and January 2020, Kangaroo Island suffered the worst and most devastating Wildfires in history which totally destroyed 50% of the island and decimated the wildlife and also livestock. Within just two weeks of the fires being declared under control, COVID ‘hit’ the world, so there is no need to elaborate on that.

Finally I saw my way clear to visit Norfolk again from 30th April to 7th May this year.

Norfolk Island is just as I remembered it, but actually even better. I managed to do all the things I missed out on during my first trip - Progressive Dinner, Island Fish Fry, Night as Convict, Fishing Charter and Commandants Dinner. This trip I also retraced my steps to include revisiting the cemetery, enjoying just driving around, taking photos of the beautiful cows, shopping, went on the Wonderland by Night trip for the second time and also found the perfect place to continue writing my book, at Puppys Point. To write at Puppys Point, was the most perfect and poignant place, given that my book is about Topsy Turvey, (one of my dogs) – the story of a little girl trapped inside a dog’s body. Topsy loved cows, and as I drove to Puppys Point every day to write another chapter or two, the cows visited me and stayed while I wrote.

I still consider Norfolk Island the most beautiful place on earth and I am already planning trip no. 3 in a couple of years time.

To all the wonderful, caring and friendly people of NI, thank you for having me.

Sincerely,

Lynne Savage
