Where to drop your different waste streams?

19 October 2023

When The Norfolk Wave Recycling Centre opened on the 1st of August, the drop-off process changed considerably from the old Waste Management Centre.

As yorlyi will know, there is no drop-off point inside the shed; everything takes place at various points outside and around the building. The Norfolk Wave is responsible for all household and commercial rubbish. This includes things like cardboard, soft and hard plastic, aluminium, steel, paper, food scraps, and other things that would generally be produced in the home. The Norfolk Island Regional Council manages everything outside of these parameters. Streams managed by NIRC include e-waste, bulky items, builders' waste, construction and demolition waste, vehicles (and parts), tyres, etc. The map below details the various locations to drop each stream when you arrive at the centre.

  1. The Residential Drop-off

Operated by Revolve Your World, the roller door drop-off point is the area for standard household waste. We accept household plastics, steel, aluminium, cardboard, paper, food scraps, small hazardous materials, and glass at this interface. More in-depth information on sorting can be found at www.thenorfolkwave.com

  1. The Commercial Drop-off

Also operated by Revolve Your World, the lower-level section of the shed is where commercial businesses drop off their waste in bulk. Restaurants, cafes, accommodations, etc. all use this area. Sometimes, people arrive at the residential drop-off with a large load of materials or perhaps a one-off load of cardboard from new furniture (for example). In that case, staff at the residential drop-off will redirect you to the commercial drop-off.

  1. Temporary Re-use Area

Managed by RYW and NIRC, this area is on the concrete slab at the old entrance to the shed. Here, you can drop off any items that might be reusable for other community members. This might be clothes, books, toys, small furniture, etc. One man's trash is another man's treasure, so feel free to peruse through the things in this area. You never know what you'll find! The Norfolk Wave team recovers what we can from this area for re-use and recycling, and NIRC manages what can't be recovered.

  1. Green Waste

NIRC's green waste area is located to the left of the bypass lane. Everything from palm leaves, tree pruning, and general green waste from yard work and clearing belongs in the green waste section.

  1. E-waste, Batteries, Waste Oil

The red shipping container around the corner from the re-use area is the place to leave your E-waste (TVs, radios, electrical appliances, old wiring, etc.). The container also houses large batteries like car batteries and waste oil from deep-frying and mechanical work.

  1. Bulky, construction, and demolition waste

NIRC's drop-off area for bulky, construction, and demolition waste is down the ramp from the red shipping container. This includes timber, disused furniture, concrete, masonry, ceramics, mattresses and oversize plastic items like large children’s toys. NIRC is also working to have a small area for reusable building products at the end of this area, where members of the public can recover items for their home renovations

  1. Scrap metal

NIRC's scrap metal pile is located towards the back of the shed and to the left before leaving the premises. Motorcycles, cars, mechanical parts (shock, CVs, radiators, etc.), fireplaces, steel beams, etc., all belong in the scrap metal pile. There are often NIRC staff available to help direct you or to organise assistance with unloading large items.

If you're ever unsure about where a particular item or material belongs, please reach out to The Norfolk Wave or NIRC staff, and we'll all do our best to point you in the right direction. Please don't assume and dump it regardless of whether it's in the correct place. This makes for a bigger cleanup job in the long run.

Also, a reminder that our operating hours are set to change from the 30th of October. Hours will be 7 am-2 pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and 7 am-3 pm Saturday.
