In Brisbane over the Christmas - New Year period many people will head off for a vacation on the Sunshine Coast at famous places on the beach like Noosa, a few hours drive north. Many make an annual pilgrimage across to Stradbroke Island, a half hour water taxi or ferry ride from the mainland.
In Sydney, many people will head for the mid and southern coasts of New South Wales, and enjoy a holiday at the seaside at places with interesting names like Bermagui or South West Rocks.
And in Auckland New Zealand people might drive for several hours north to holiday at the Bay of Islands, or east to Mt Manganui.
On Norfolk Island many head off to holiday beneath the pines that circle Emily Bay, or next to Cemetery Beach, and remain at most 15 minutes from home. If you take a drive down to Kingston you will be able to see the rows of canvas and plastic that are the holiday homes of locals. Home beneath the pines can be just a simple tent for shelter, to a home away from home with hot and cold running water, a sink, a fridge, microwave oven, and a gas cooking top.
From November to February many Norfolk families enjoy this wonderful tradition with Norfolk pines to shelter them, and the beaches and waters of Kingston as their playground. To these holiday makers ‘yu ka biit et’ (you can’t beat it)!
