For public safety, a dead pine will be removed from the Aunt Jemima memorial plantation on Country Road, located near the entrance of Did’s driveway.
Limbs from the dead tree are dropping, posing safety risks to passing pedestrians, motorists and cattle.
The specific cause of this tree dying is unknown, however the Department continues to monitor the health of the trees in the row. The row of pines along Country Road is a commemoration of centenarian Aunt ‘Jemima’ Robinson, who turned 100 on 13 September 1970, with a plaque marking the occasion located beneath the pine across from the cenotaph.
Family members of Aunt ‘Jemima’ have been approached for input on the future management of the plantation.
The department recognises the importance of preserving and protecting Norfolk Island’s trees for future generations, and will only support the removal of trees which present a safety risk or a negative impact to the heritage values of the site.
To safely remove the tree, Country Road between the Cenotaph and Watermill will be closed for about two hours. A radio notice will advise the date on which this will occur.
