One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, anieh? The reuse area at The Norfolk Wave is a treasure trove! We have everything from school clothes and crockpots to puzzles, books, and brand-new Ghanda shirts! For those who aren’t clear on where the reuse area is, look at the map below. It’s tucked around the corner from the roller door drop-off points. The reuse area isn’t permanent; in time, NIRC will provide a space to keep these quality items circulating in the community. However, for now, wii se miekduu with this cozy space! At times, it can get a bit cluttered, but we’ve just started with a team of volunteers who generously give their time to help find creative ways to manage the vast amounts of ‘stuff’ that gets dropped in the reuse area.
When sorting the clothes on our end, we’ve separated the ripped, stained, and mediocre from the clean, quality, and often branded items. These are arranged on the tables in the reuse area with men, women and letl salan all having their own table. What’s deemed ‘average’ by our volunteers is left in the plastic crates in the centre for baling and export. As yorlyi know, we’re working with a textiles recycling company in Australia and sending our excess clothes to Lifeline. What isn’t rehomed on Norfolk will hopefully find a home somewhere in Australia or be repurposed.
If you’ve got treasures you think someone else might appreciate, please bring them to the reuse area. It is reserved ONLY for decent, working items. Please don’t leave broken objects, general rubbish, or things the next person won’t appreciate. This is how the area can become chaotic.
When bringing any fresh clothes, please leave them in the plastic crates. This will make it easier for us and our volunteers to know what’s yet to be sorted.
If you’d like to get hands-on and help us manage the reuse area, please call Lilli on 56626.
