Seven years ago, two young people Tania and Jorden created the Boomerang Bag. It was made to stop the spread of single use plastic bags. We now know how dangerous they are in the oceans of the world, and millions of discarded plastic bags thrown into land fill.
Tania and Jordan’s philosophy for living can be expressed in the words of Gandhi and Dr. Seuss -
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.”
Another young person, my daughter Gabrielle noticed the bags whilst studying in Brisbane and immediately contacted me. Eco Norfolk, an environmental organisation here on Norfolk organized a meeting of people interested in the making the bags.
That was six years ago.
Over this time 20,000 shopping bags have been made, as well as Book bags for the young children starting at NICS, specially shaped pillow slips made for the elderly on dar randa and vegetable bags made from light weight curtains that are now sold at Foodland,
Materials used to make the Boomerang Bags are recycled fabrics, doona covers, drapes, pillow slips, curtains, all donated by the Norfolk Island community.
Special designed bags are sold at the airport, 200 bags were made for the Health and Wellbeing expo, and a younger style shoulder bag was made last year to give to the year 12 students as a thank you for the money raised during their Muck Up Day.
There are 8 volunteers who meet every Wednesday and Saturday afternoons in a building down Mitchell’s Lane, behind P & R’s.
On average we make between 30 – 40 bags each afternoon, that’s between 240-320 bags per month.
If you would like to help, call in any Saturday afternoon between 12.30 and 3 pm., we would love to see you.
There are now over 1,200 countries around the world making the environmentally friendly boomerang bag.
Young people, like yourselves, made this happen.
