Termite species found on Norfolk Island

23 August 2023

DID YOU KNOW - in 2010, Accredited Pest control Norfolk Island came across Australia’s most damaging termite species in a yard here on Norfolk Island.

After a bit of investigation, it was discovered that the termites had moved to neighbouring properties as well. The only way to identify the type of termite that had been discovered on that property was to collect the soldier, which is often difficult to find within the colony as normally the soldier is in the nest and not out working with the workers. However we got lucky and a soldier was able to be collected and sent away to CSIRO Canberra for Identification purposes.

Since the specimens were slightly larger than those previously identified within Australia, identifying this specimen was difficult, but it came to light the termites we were dealing with were in fact Coptotermes Acinacaformis, considered the most damaging termite species that was known of within Australian. Sadly, it was discovered that the termites had been on island for over 10 years but were not treated or monitored at all throughout this time.

Both properties were treated and monitoring/ bait stations have been installed to prevent further damage and alert for any further presence. If you see any unusual activity around your building that could be related to termites, or even if you find some other critter that you don’t recognise then contact Adam at Accredited Pest Control Norfolk Island on 50210 or apcni@outlook.com
