The September Equinox is on Tuesday, the 23 September 2025, the date that marks the sun crossing the celestial equator. On the equinoxes the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is almost equal, 12 hours, all over the world.
In the Southern Hemisphere this the Spring Equinox, and the Northern Hemisphere this the Autumn Equinox. Equinox is a Latin word meaning aequus (equal) and nox (night) or “equal night”. The Spring Vernal Equinox marks the astronomical first day of spring. It is also the point in the calendar where the day length is more or less equal to the length of the night.
It is around this time of year that Day Light Saving starts, here on Norfolk Island on 5 October 2025 our clocks go forward making the evenings stay light and marking the beginning of summertime activities.
After Sunday the Earth will continue to tilt making or days longer and nights shorter as we enjoy the season of spring. Longer days mean more daylight hours and a chance to enjoy the great outdoors here on Norfolk Island. Dust off the BBQ and head to the beach, the picnic areas will soon be filling up again as our days get longer and the weather warms up.
