From the principal’s desk

The sports pavilion at the top of the oval is progressing well and should be operational for the start of 2022. This dynamic space will include a teaching area; space for gym equipment; toilets; and as well, a separate area for the Athletics Club. The sports pavilion will be able to accommodate a number of classes and function as a wet weather option for indoor activities.

Works are to commence over the Christmas break on the COLA (covered outdoor learning area) a roof which will span the entire netball court. This project has been a long time in the making and will dramatically change the playground for students with respect to shade during the warm months, and provide protection from wet weather. I am excited about the new works and upgrade to facilities for the students, and also for greater community use.

Acting Principal

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 Debating Team

On Wednesday, 3rd November, our Year 5/6 Debating Team of Layla Dixon, Callum Clay, Keeley Brown and Tyla Schmitz, debated against Dubbo Public School in the quarter finals of the Premiers Debating Challenge. Unfortunately, the team were defeated and eliminated during a tough debate. This team have gone from strength to strength, conducting themselves impressively during every debate, and improving their skills significantly during the season. This is an outstanding result, and the entire school community are very proud of their achievements.

Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser

I would like to acknowledge the work of the SRC in raising over $500 dollars last week for the Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser. The SRC have generously matched the funds raised by the students and staff, to a grand total of more than $1000. Well done to the students for this important initiative.

HSC Commences

The HSC finally commences, after several delays this year. I wish all of the Year 12 students the best of luck for the upcoming month of examinations. All of the examinations will be held at the Uniting Hall Church. Good luck, Year 12!

An exciting leadership opportunity for NICS students! Norfolk Island Health and Wellbeing Ambassador Program

The NICS Wellbeing Team, in conjunction with the community Health and Wellbeing Team, are pleased to announce the introduction of the Norfolk Island Health and Wellbeing Ambassador program.

This program will allow students from Years 7 – 11 at NICS the opportunity to volunteer to support health and wellbeing initiatives in the school, and in the community.

The Norfolk Health and Wellbeing Ambassador program aims to increase knowledge of harms related to alcohol and other drugs, and to build skills to support others within peer groups.

The program will consist of a launch session where students from the target group and their families, plus other community members, will be invited to attend a session that will provide an overview of the program. A visiting expert will facilitate this session and will also provide information on the key topics within the program.

Following the initial introduction, there will be six one-hour sessions delivered outside of school hours focusing on different topics, including: self-belief; tobacco; vaping; alcohol; helping others affected by alcohol and other drugs; and safe partying. Students will engage in a group project on one of these areas.

These sessions will then be followed by a “graduation” event, to which families and other community members will be invited. Participants will present their projects and receive a completion package for participating in the program. These packages may include shopping vouchers, fuel vouchers, phone credit vouchers and a certificate of completion.

Remember, we are all responsible for health and wellbeing! If you would like more information, please speak with Mrs Miller or Ms Ellis.
