Year 12 Lunch
Thank you to the Administrator of Norfolk Island, Mr Eric Hutchinson, who kindly hosted a luncheon on
Wednesday for the outgoing Year 12 cohort for 2021. The students appreciated the hospitality and best wishes
as the HSC fast approaches.
Stop work meeting
As you may be aware, there has been some industrial action this week in the form of stop work meetings. There
is the potential for further stopwork meetings over the next week or two. There will be no disruption for families,
with all action planned during the day, and all students being fully supervised in the playground or classrooms.
The Inagural Gabrielle Beaumont Environment Award
Gab’s family are pleased to offer this new award in her memory.
Gab grew up at Norfolk Island, and she was passionate about our beautiful island. When she was eight years old
she became President of the Environmental Club that she formed with Ellie Shaw, Sashie Connolly, Kellie Muir,
Livi Cooper and Dean Menzies. They held regular and very formal meetings in a garden shed at Cutters Corn.
They opened a bank account for the money they raised, which they used to buy native trees. Together, this
group of eight-year olds planted trees in the National Park.
Gab completed her HSC at NICS whilst working at Foodland where she persistently asked customers, “Do you
really need that plastic bag?”. Gab was the founder of Boomerang Bags here on Norfolk and was passionate
about reducing her carbon footprint.
The prize will be awarded in recognition of a student’s keen interest in sustainability and contribution towards the
protection of the natural environment at Norfolk Island, and is open to students from Years 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
Nominations will be made by the Committee of Stage 3, 4 and 5 Teachers.
Prize: A copy of the book, Nourishing Traditions, by Sally Fallon and $200 prize money.
Ways you could show your eligibility include:
Volunteering to help with tree planting and weed control around Norfolk; joining the NICS Sustainability Group;
always participating in recycling and repurposing activities such as the Lids for Kids project; join the Norfolk
Wave Campaign and Take 3 for the Sea. Don’t forget to check the local paper for more opportunities to protect
our environment.
