Police Report - 3 June 2022

03 June 2022

Norfolk Island Police have conducted somewhere in the vicinity of 80 random breath tests in the past two weeks and we are very happy to say we have had no samples in excess of the prescribed concentration recorded. It’s also fantastic to note we have recorded no vehicle crashes as a result of impaired drivers in that same period which is contrary to the 4 weeks prior.

This is outstanding and all I can do is thank the Norfolk community for the support and compliance and for the patience and understanding while waiting to be tested at the various stations that were established around the island. We will continue the random breath testing and traffic compliance stations into the future.

We regularly receive traffic complaints from our community. If you witness a traffic incident, particularly out of hours, please gather as much information as you can. Time, date, place, vehicle description including registration number if possible, the identity of the driver if known and the exact behaviour you are reporting. Let us know if this is a one off or common occurrence and most importantly if you are prepared to provide Police with a statement in relation to this reported behaviour. We have received numerous complaints from locals and tourists relating to driving behaviour following the closing of the bars on weekends. We are very happy to progress these complaints and in most circumstances have the authority to seize vehicles involved in these incidents.

Our second Coffee with a Cop is now set for Wednesday 22 June 2022 which is 3 weeks away. The fantastic team at Enitaim Café have agreed to host us and we are excited to support another Norfolk Island café. This time we will be fortunate to have the Commander for the External Territories portfolio, Commander Linda Champion present. This is a great opportunity for Norfolk Islanders to come and have a coffee on the AFP and to speak to the Commander about issues and or concerns you may have about your Community Policing expectations. She will be extremely keen to hear your thoughts, ideas, complaints or suggestions.

So 10am Wednesday 22 June 2022, Enitaim Café, please come along.

A special mention to the tour bus drivers on island. They are an incredible bunch of people with what I consider a unique sense of humour that they often aim at the constabulary if not each other. The drivers have continued to wear masks while tourists are on board and ensure compliance amongst the tour groups unless they have exemption. They are entertaining, polite and a genuine positive first impression of Norfolk Island to tourists arriving at the airport. I enjoy the comradery they share with each other and only too eager to share with anyone interested. To our team of bus drivers, you are a great bunch, you are very much underrated and you are an asset to Norfolk tourism so a big thank you.
