Police report - 26 January 2024

26 January 2024

  • A reminder to motorists that school is back on and to watch their speeds in the school zone;
  • Sometime between 8pm on Sunday 21 January and 6pm on Monday 23 January 4 fence posts have been taken from the Rotary’s Ball Bay Picnic area. These posts are each 2 metres long with bevelled tops. The bottoms of the posts are painted with a black protective coating. Police are requesting that they be returned no questions asked. Failing that, if anyone has information about who may have taken the posts, Police would like to speak to them;
  • Police are also asking for any information in relation to damage that has been done to the slide in Lions Park. Unfortunately the slide has been damaged to such a degree that NIRC will have to replace the slide at considerable cost. This sort of behaviour affects the whole community and is very disappointing;
  • Over the last few weeks the NIPF have seized 3 motorcycles from riders who have been riding in a dangerous manner. We have spoken about this before and continue to see motorcyclists riding dangerously. Police will continue to seize motorcycles or cars from riders/drivers who display dangerous riding/driving habits. If the same riders/drivers continue to come to notice the NIPF will strongly consider taking those people to Court. The roads are there for everyone to use safely and the NIPF does not want to see anyone hurt as a result of negligent behaviour;
  • Please take care when riding or driving near cows and horses that are on the side of the road. We have received some reports of motorcyclists deliberately revving engines around some horses which spooked the horses. This behaviour is dangerous for the rider and totally unnecessary. If we receive further reports and are given information to identify the riders, we will seize the vehicles involved.
  • It is disappointing that a constant theme of our radio and media is centred around anti-social driving/riding habits.
  • Lastly, as some people will already know, Rob and James have left Norfolk Island and returned to mainland Australia. We now have 2 new members on island, Matt and Chris, who I’m sure you will meet and make welcome in the coming weeks.
