Not much on the news front:
The police have been receiving an increasing number of complaints about e bikes and how they are being used here on Norfolk by some people. There have been reports of young people (mainly) riding on footpaths and almost colliding with people as they walk along the paths or are exiting the shops.
We are asking parents to make sure their children are aware of their responsibilities when they are riding these e bikes, or in fact any bicycle. The footpaths are designed for people to walk on but they are considered a shared zone to be used by bicycles as well. People using bicycles have to slow down and be cautious and aware of pedestrians.
Owners of e bikes should also be aware that there is legislation governing the use of e bikes. Some of these e bikes are very powerful and are actually considered to be a registerable vehicle which means that they are not permitted on the footpaths and that to be used on the road or any road related area they must be properly registered like any other motorcycle or motor vehicle.
The NIPF are in the final process of checking the specifications of registerable e bikes and will let the community know when we have the answer. Be mindful that you may be required to register your e bike if it is over the allowable limit.
