- People may have seen the gazette recently and become concerned about speed cameras being put up on Norfolk Island. I’m here to tell you that there are no speed detecting cameras on Norfolk Island and as far as I am aware, there are no plans to install any speed detecting cameras. The gazette was notifying the community of 2 new speed measuring devices, or lasers, which we use to measure the speed of vehicles travelling on the road. Any new devices have to be published in the gazette. These 2 new lasers are replacing older ones which we have retired.
- Some of you may remember that back in 2022 I mentioned on the radio that random drug testing for motorists was coming to Norfolk Island. It has taken a while but I am letting everyone know that the Minister has now signed off on the legislation and the NIPF are now able to test drivers and riders for illicit drugs in their system. I know there are a number of people on Norfolk who have prescriptions for medicinal marijuana. I need everyone to know that having a prescription for medicinal marijuana does not mean that you can operate a motor vehicle while you are under the influence so please be careful and make good decisions.
- This week’s piece of traffic legislation:

(d) is situated at or near a traffic sign comprising a line marked across or partly across the carriageway of the road at or near the junction or intersection of that road and another road,
shall —
(e) stop the vehicle or cycle immediately before reaching the line marked on the road; and
(f) not proceed beyond that line until able to do so without hindering the progress of any motor or horse drawn vehicle or cycle passing along that other road.
Penalty: (a) 3 penalty units; or
(b) in the case of a second or subsequent conviction — 6 penalty units.
