  • We were hoping that we could take a few weeks off from talking about negative driving behaviours but unfortunately that does not appear to be the case.
  • Norfolk Island traffic legislation is designed to protect all road users, both local and visitors. The legislation puts rules around speed limits, actions at give way and stop signs and seatbelts to name a few things.
  • Up to this point the NIPF has been very lenient and used an approach of education rather than penalties but the message does not seem to be sinking in. We must stress that it is definitely the minority of drivers and riders who are doing the wrong thing. Most motorists are very careful and considerate while they are on the roads and we appreciate that.
  • On a daily basis we see people continuing to travel through the school zone well above the legal 30kph limit. Motorists cut corners and motorcyclists perform unsafe manoeuvres on the roads such as travelling on their rear wheels.
  • Last week we got a P plate driver travelling at over 80kph on New Cascade Road. Speeds like that are extremely dangerous and there is no reason for people to be driving at those speeds.
  • After the organised memorial ride last weekend some participants were doing wheelies down Taylors Road and causing issues for other motorists. All this behaviour does is bring more scrutiny to future events.
  • Please slow down and obey the road rules. Leave home or work 5 minutes earlier and then you won’t have to speed. Protect your community and slow down through the school zone.
  • On a positive note we would like to thank the people that assisted a motorist last week after the motorist had a collision at the roundabout at Taylors Road and New Cascade Road.
  • Please put your headlights on in these foggy conditions, it makes it much easier for other motorists to see you.
  • I am sure most people are as tired of us harping on about negative driving behaviour as we are about repeating the same message over and over again.
  • In other news I would like to let everyone know that on Sunday 9 November at 3pm the NIPF will be sponsoring a charity golf day at the golf course. It promises to be a bit of fun and all proceeds will go to the Sunshine Club. Put a team of 4 people together and come to support a worthwhile cause. You do not need to be a member of the golf club to play. Spots are limited so if you are interested speak to Andrew at the pro shop.
