Please Explain

Please explain how we are going to stop insects coming to Norfolk Island by ship.

Currently biosecurity won't go to the ship to check out the cargo. It shouldn't be anyone else's job to check for bugs, but at the same time, the environmental security of our island is everyone's responsibility.

Many thanks to the lighterage workers who ceased work as soon the Carpenter ants, hitchhiking in cargo, began swarming all over Cascade Pier.

For those that don't know much about Carpenter ants, this is what Mr Google has to say: The Carpenter ant, or Camponotus spp., is a fairly large ant species notorious for terrorising Australian homeowners. If left untreated, they can cause significant damage to your property, as they enjoy munching and drilling on wood. They don't eat it so much as drill through any wood, living or dead, to create nests. Carpenter ants are not harmful to humans and pets as they usually don't bite. In rare cases, the bite may result in a burning sensation that resides for a few minutes. Carpenter ants can be dangerous to your home structure. These ants excavate wooded areas of properties and make them hollow.

Rough translation: The damage they could do to our environment, if they managed to establish themselves, borders on catastrophic.
