PFAS - found in Norfolk Island

22 June 2023

The Norfolk Island Chamber of Commerce, Inc has discussed with law firm possibility of preliminary investigation into PFAS in Norfolk Island. Those investigations may lead to a class action for:

  • · loss and damage of property
  • · reduction in land value
  • · businesses being impacted
  • · unable to use bores, wells
  • · Other issues

If any person(s) has concerns that firefighting foam was sprayed on land and/or there has been runoff into creeks, bores, wells from that spraying and would like to discuss with the law firm, please email Chamber norfolkisland.coc@gmail.com

Over the years many areas of Norfolk Island have had the foam sprayed on ground and in the air. That liquid is eventually released into the soil some areas include:

  • School – is there a runoff from there and to where?
  • Kingston areas – is it in the creeks, in Emily and Slaughter Bays?
  • Works Depot – is there runoff into creek below?
  • Mission Creek area runoff from airport

In 2019 CSIRO report stated PFAS was found in Norfolk Island.

A 2021 Norfolk Island Regional Council document states “we have been advised that the Water Hyacinth is potentially contaminated with PFAS..”

  • How did the possibility of PFAS get into the hyacinths in Watermill Catchment?
  • Was there a runoff from somewhere into the dam?

The Chamber is informed that several weeks ago approximately 7,000 litres of concentrated Ansulite Aqueous Film Forming Foam was sitting in containers near the Norfolk Island runway.

Business owners, landowners and other people affected by PFAS please get in touch with the Chamber to speak with the lawyers.
