SCORPIO
This week in the Norfolk Island night sky
The moon is currently in a waxing crescent phase and the full moon this month will occur on Tuesday 14th June. The constellation of Orion is now too low to be seen after sun set, however looking at the easterly night sky, the constellation of Scorpio can be seen clearly, along with the Southern Cross.
Did you know?
…that at the heart of the constellation of Scorpio is the Red Giant star of Antares? Antares is approx. 600 light years away and is around 700 times the size of our sun. It is fairly easily seen due to its red, orange colour and is quite distinct from the other stars in Scorpio.
Astronomy quote
"High-luminosity stars are the rarest. In any given volume of space, they're outnumbered by the low-luminosity stars a thousand to one."
-Neil deGrasse Tyson
