This week in the Norfolk Island night sky
The moon is currently in a waning crescent phase, with the new moon occurring on Monday 13/11. Jupiter and Saturn are clearly visible in the night sky, rising in the East and setting in the west. Saturn rises earlier so will be seen higher in the night sky and Jupiter is by far, the brighter of the two.
Did you know?
Did you know that Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and has 80 - 90 moons? The four most easily seen are Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, in order from the closest to the furthest from the planet.
Io is full of volcanos pumping out sulphur, Europa is an “Ice World” with an ice shell and Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system. Jupiter is so large it can fit all the planets in our solar system inside it.
