Norfolk Island Cricket Club Celebrates Official Opening of Pitch With 20/20 Game

02 March 2023

Norfolk Island, an Australian External Territory in the Pacific Ocean, is set to celebrate its Foundation Day with a cricket game and the official opening of a new cricket pitch at Kingston Oval.

The cricket game, scheduled for 2pm on Foundation Day, will feature local players and is expected to attract a large crowd of both locals and tourists. The game is being organised by the Norfolk Island Cricket Club, which has been working tirelessly to promote the sport on the island.

According to the Club's President, Teddy Evans, the new pitch at Kingston Oval is a major milestone for cricket on Norfolk Island. "We've been working towards this for a long time," he said. "Having a proper cricket pitch will not only help us develop the sport on the island but will also attract more visitors who want to play or watch cricket."

The newly surfaced wicket, which sits in the centre of the oldest Cricket Oval in the Southern Hemisphere, was replaced with funding from the Department of Infrastructure and the maintenance delivered by Kingston Arthur’s Vale Historical Area team.

The official opening of the new cricket pitch will be a highlight of the Foundation Day celebrations, which mark the day the first European settlers arrived on Norfolk Island in 1788.

Cricket has a long history on Norfolk Island, with the sport being played by locals and visiting sailors since the early 19th century. The Norfolk Island Cricket Club was re-established in 2022 and has been working to promote the sport on the Island.

According to Mr. Evans, cricket on Norfolk Island has come a long way in recent years, with more and more locals wishing to get involved in the sport. "We have a dedicated group of players and supporters who are passionate about cricket and want to see it thrive on Norfolk Island," he said.

The Foundation Day cricket game and the opening of the new pitch are sure to be a highlight of the celebrations, and the Norfolk Island Cricket Club is hoping to use the occasion to promote the sport and attract more players and supporters.

As Mr. Evans puts it, "We want to show the world that cricket is alive and well on Norfolk Island, and we're looking forward to a great game on Foundation Day.
