Did you know that Norfolk Island has the oldest cricket pitch in the Southern Hemisphere?
Cricket is recorded as having been played on Norfolk Island as early as 1838, by soldiers stationed on the island. It continued to be played after the island was settled in 1856 by the Pitcairn Islanders.
From 1876 until well into the 20th century, a match was played annually on Bounty Day, a tradition that was resumed in 1997 through to the early 2000’s.
The Norfolk Island Cricket Club (NICC) is eager to bring cricket back to the Island and will be looking to get all age groups involved; from juniors through to adults. With exciting, fast paced, cricket formats surging in popularity all over the globe, being able to offer another sport to locals and residents over the balmy summer months and bring people together at the beautiful World Heritage Kingston area will be a great addition to the community.
In addition to this, NICC will be aiming to reintroduce the annual Bounty Day match from 2023 and re-establish one of the islands oldest traditions.
Watch this space as the Norfolk Island Cricket Club goes through the process of forming an association. An AGM will be held on Monday 24th October to officially start the Club’s objective: to foster and promote youth and senior cricket on the island.
