The annual Norfolk Island Bird Week was on again from 13-19 November, with 20 bird-lovers arriving to learn about the islands feathered residents.
With many days of spectacular weather the twitchers were able to enjoy tours around the Island with Margaret Christian, and a tour of the seabird breeding colonies and local reserves with Ron Ward. Some of the species spotted included Masked Boobies (Gannets), Tropic Birds, Black-winged Petrels, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters and many of the passerine species which call Norfolk home. One of the highlights was seeing the Green Parrot (which some in the group joked that they wouldn’t be leaving until they saw one! ) The visitors also enjoyed an adventurous trip to Phillip Island and a Pelagic Boat Tour with Charter Marine, and many other local tours. A night-time tour of the island’s nocturnal inhabitants resulted in a rare sighting of a Boobook owl, much to the delight of those on the tour.
Attendees were treated to a presentation on Wednesday evening at Bounty Bar and Grill by Norfolk Island National Park’s Natural Resources Manager Mel Wilson, who spoke on some of the different projects undertaken by the team over the last two decades to help protect and increase breeding rates of the endemic Green Parrot. We would like to thank local bird expert Marg Christian, Ron Ward for his insightful tour, David and Jacqui Bigg from Charter Marine, National Park staff including Mel Wilson for her knowledgeable presentation, and local restaurants Paradise’s Garden Restaurant, Foodland Deli, Bounty Bar and Grill, and Bailey’s Restaurant for hosting the group dinners. Thanks to yorlyi’s support, the week was a great success. On behalf of Joyce, Bec and the entire Norfolk Island Travel Centre team we hope everyone had an enjoyable week on the island and look forward to welcoming you back next year.
