NICS News Week 2 Term 3

20 July 2023

From the Principal’s Desk

Congratulations to Koszta Deszecsar who represented Norfolk Island Central School at the QLD State Cross Country Championships last week. Koszta competed in the 18/19 boys 8000m event finishing in 33rd place. This is a huge achievement. Koszta also competed in the relay events. It has been great to see so many students from NICS have the opportunity to compete in Australia at such a high level.

There has been a significant increase in damage occurring to student laptops. Students must carry the laptop in the provided case. For damage that occurs to laptops without a case, parents may be asked to pay for the repairs. We are at a stage now that we have limited loan devices.

Over the past couple of weekends, there have been a large number of students on the school site late into the night. These students have been detected using the school network to access the internet. I encourage all families to please have a conversation with their children about not coming onto the school site during the night. This is particularly important considering the recent damage and theft.

Prep information session 2024

NICS will host a parent information session on Thursday, 3 August at 4.30pm, in the prep room next to the canteen. This session is for all parents of children who will be enrolling in Prep in 2024. Enrolment packs will be available for parents. This will be an opportunity to meet with staff and connect with families, followed by Q&A time. I look forward to meeting students and new families.

NICS school review — an opportunity to have your say

Our school is scheduled for a review from 22 to 25 August, 2023.

The Department of Education regularly reviews state schools in Queensland. The reviews are conducted by the department’s School and Region Reviews branch.

The reviews do not rate or compare schools, but provide independent feedback to allow schools to continue to improve learning outcomes for students.

All schools have a review at least once every four years. Key findings from the review will be made available to parents and the community on our school website.

The review team would like to hear from the school community, and I encourage anyone who is interested to have their say. Your feedback is important and will help us continue to deliver a great education for students.

To gather representative community voice for this review, the following community members may approach you to ask for your views on the school:

  • Joel Reeves
  • Rhonda Griffiths
  • Cherie Nobbs
  • Megan Magri
  • Stephanie Fielder

They might be interested in talking to you about the school, or you might be interested in finding one of these people to have your say.

From 22 to 25 August, the review team; an independent group of people from the Department of Education; will visit the school to listen to these representatives share this community’s voice. The review team will also be interviewing a significant number of other people from the school community, as well as staff and students.

Feedback can be provided to the review team by phone or in person. All feedback remains confidential. Please contact the school office if you are interested in speaking to a reviewer. Alternatively, you can register your interest by emailing reviews@qed.qld.gov.au.

More information about the review process is available from the department’s website at www.schoolreviews.education.qld.gov.au

Athletics Carnival

The Athletics Carnival is set for next Wednesday. I look forward to seeing the community come together to cheer on the students in their house colours.
