NICS News Week 1 Term 2

21 April 2023

From the Principal’s Desk

On behalf of the NICS community, I would like to welcome everyone back for Term 2. I’d like to welcome all of the new enrolments and families to NICS. It is great to see our school continue to grow.

Congratulations to Samantha Powell who was successful in gaining the position of P-2 Head of Department. This will mean there will be some changes to the P/1 class, with Femke Cornelissen stepping in as the core teacher.

ANZAC Day is on Tuesday, 25 April, with several events around the island to commemorate the day. NICS will hold a school commemorative service on Wednesday, 26 April at 1.45pm. A special thank you to the community members and RSL Sub-Branch who will be in attendance. School leaders will attend the community ceremony at the Cenotaph.

We take great pride in our school and the wearing of school uniform is an observable demonstration of this. As the weather is starting to cool down, students are reminded to wear the correct school jumper and pants, and to continue the wearing of the school hat. If students are out of uniform, please send a note to explain the situation. If families need assistance with acquiring school uniform, please contact the Deputy Principal, Kirstie Ireland.

A reminder the Cross Country Carnival will be held on Wednesday, 3 May. All details and maps can be found in the newsletter from last week.

School external review

In Term 3 this year, NICS will undergo an external school review. These reviews are conducted in QLD schools every four years. School reviews are conducted by a team that generally includes an internal reviewer, a principal peer reviewer and an external reviewer. At the completion of each review, the review team presents its findings and improvement strategies to the principal, school leadership team and assistant regional director. The principal analyses the review findings with their assistant regional director, discusses the findings with the school community, and uses the feedback to inform the school’s forward strategic planning.

In preparation for the review later this year, the review team are visiting NICS on Wednesday, 26 April. The review team will speak with a wide range of staff, students, parents and community members to gain a deeper understanding of the school, its performance and context. Participation is voluntary and all feedback is confidential.

If this is something in which you would be interested in participating, please contact Russell Moore to book a time for Wednesday, 26 April. There are limited spaces available.
