NICS News Week 1 Term 2

22 April 2022

From the Principal’s Desk

On behalf of the NICS community, I would like to welcome everyone back for Term 2. I’d like to welcome all of the new enrolments and families to NICS. It is great to see our school continue to grow.

I would like to wish Mia Pashley, Year 9, and Jesse Schmitz, Year 10, the best of luck as they depart next week for a six week visit to Beaudesert State High School. The students will attend school while training and playing for the Beaudesert Kingfisher Rugby League Club. This is a fantastic opportunity and experience. Best of luck, and I look forward to hearing of your successes representing Norfolk Island.

ANZAC Day is on Monday, 25 April, with several events around the island to commemorate the day. NICS will hold a school commemorative service on Tuesday, 26 April at 10am. Thank you to Riley Quintal, Koszta Deszecsar and Wilkes Creek for being involved as cadets in our school service. A special thank you to the community members and RSL Sub-Branch who will be in attendance.

With the easing of restrictions, students and staff are still encouraged to continue to wear masks when they are unable to socially distance. NICS will continue with the additional COVID-cleaning program, ventilation in classes and hand-hygiene messages. As always, if students are feeling unwell, please keep them at home. If students at school have COVID-like symptoms, we will contact parents to collect their children and continue providing RAT tests as previously arranged.

I have received a few phone calls regarding Labour Day in QLD falling on Monday, 2nd May. This is not a Public Holiday for NICS, even though we are under Queensland Education. School as normal for Monday, 2nd May.

Acting Principal

Breakfast club

I’d like to thank NI Connect for continuing the breakfast program running on Wednesday mornings on the library veranda from 8.30am. All students are welcome to come along for a light breakfast of toast and juice. This will continue every Wednesday for Term 2.

Study Centre

Study centre is open to students from Year 6-12 on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3-4pm in the library. It is a free, teacher-facilitated service that can assist students to complete homework, classwork and assignments.

Bounty Ball 2022

Bounty Ball practice will commence on the first week back this term on Thursday, 21 April, after school from 3:00pm – 3:45pm. Students from P-2 will meet on the veranda outside Room 20. Students from Years 3 and above will be at the Uniting Church hall. This will run each week up until the Bounty Ball on Saturday, 4 June. Thank you to Jan Reeves for her ongoing support of the students at NICS. Students, please start working out your partners.

Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey Information

In Term 2, Week 2, students from Years 4 to 12 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey. We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The department and Norfolk Island Central School are looking at ways to collect information on these topics so we can support our students in the best way possible.

The Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey is designed to measure how state school students view their wellbeing and engagement. Results from this survey will tell us about students’ levels of wellbeing and engagement. This information will allow us to better support our students and meet their needs.

Teachers will arrange for students to take part in the survey online during class time. It will take about 30 minutes to complete. If your child requires additional assistance, teachers and/or support people are able to help them. If you have any questions please phone Kelly Kuhz, Deputy Principal.

Secondary Sport Update

Term 2 secondary sport has begun with a variety of sports on rotation. All students are required to return a permission note. Thank you to those students who have already done so. Please remember to wear your hat and take a water bottle to sport.

The school cross country carnival is scheduled for May 25, which is in Week 6.

Things coming up in Term 2, Week 2:

  • ANZAC Day service at NICS- Tuesday, April 25, 10am.
