NICS News Term 4 – Week 4

27 October 2022

From the Principal’s Desk

On Wednesday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Rama Film Festival. This event highlighted the many talented filmmakers here on island, including several students from NICS. I would like to congratulate the students for their entries and to see the level of skill applied in the writing, filming and editing of their films. A special thank you to Nat and Luca for linking in with NICS to provide this great opportunity to our students. I look forward to 2023.

I wold like to welcome a new staff member to the NICS team, Rachel Beaden. Rachel will be working in the HPE faculty for the remainder of 2022. Welcome, Rachel.

This week, we were lucky to be visited by Charlie Kingsford and the team from the Australian Museum. Charlie presented workshops to students across P-10 this week, focusing on the array of exhibits at the museum. Charlie also spoke with our older students about the range of pathways available through museum work, and announced an exciting opportunity for students to express their interest in undertaking work experience at the museum. Students in Years 9 and 10 will be provided with further information about this opportunity in their History lessons with Mrs Miller. in the coming weeks. We thank Charlie and the team for visiting us at NICS, and look forward to welcoming them back soon!

Kind regards,

Russell Moore

Drug and Alcohol survey

The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre are running a project which aims to identify if alcohol and other drugs are a concern to Norfolk Islanders, and to develop plans to keep the community safe.

This project is important because it will build the capacity within Norfolk Island’s community to identify if there are areas of concern, and plan and evaluate appropriate responses, with support from researchers, to provide scientific and research guidance. It is the hope of the newly-formed partnerships to develop a sustainable process that can be managed by the Norfolk Island community in the future.

Students from ages 14 and above are able to complete a brief anonymous online survey. Pleas find further details on the NICS website.
