NICS News Term 3 – Week 1

22 July 2022

From the Principal’s Desk

Thank you to the families who attended a number of after school information sessions this week. On Tuesday, Year 9 and 10 parents were briefed on the QCE and changes for students moving into Year 11. Wednesday afternoon was a very informative presentation on cybersafety using Stymie, followed by an information session from TAFE and Charles Sturt University to senior students and families.

This week NICS had the privilege of a visit from Minister Kristy McBain and Senator David Pocock. Thank you to both visitors for taking the time to visit the school for a tour, visiting classes and meeting staff.

Ellie Dixon has left Norfolk Island to travel to Birmingham to compete in Lawn Bowls in the Commonwealth Games. Ellie is competing in the Women’s Triples and Women’s Fours. We wish Ellie all the best in her travels and her competition.

Kind regards,

Russell Moore

Tertiary Information Week

Thank you to the representatives from TAFE and Charles Sturt University for supporting students at NICS and their pathways post-school. The feedback from students was very positive. If parents would like further information, please contact the school who can pass on the details of the presenters.

Due to the staffing challenges many employers are currently facing, we could not have the occupation part of the Careers Market at this time. We hope to be able to do this later in the year. If you have any questions, please contact the school.

Year 10 Senior Education and Training Plan (SET Plan) – Term 3

Students in Year 10 will shortly commence the process to develop their Senior Education and Training (SET) plan under Queensland Senior Secondary Schooling. The SET plan helps students structure their senior learning around their abilities, interests and ambitions. SET Plans are reviewed at various stages throughout Year 11 and 12 to make sure subjects and learning are right for individual students, and to ensure pathways are maintained to the courses and careers students want after Year 12.

Throughout the year at NICS, Year 10 students have been provided with opportunities to explore their options through a Career Education program.

SET Plan interviews involve a representative of the school, Year 10 parents/caregivers and the student. During these interviews, students will further develop their SET Plan and solidify their senior subject choices. Parents/caregivers will be requested to attend the interviews, which will be held during Week 5 of Term 3, so that all parties can discuss and agree to the plan. It is also an opportunity for parents/caregivers and students to discuss future study and career paths. Information sessions for families will be held prior to the interviews during Week 2 of Term 3.

More information about SETP is available on the QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) website.

Stymie Launch

Stymie has been launched at NICS this week with students from Years 5-12 attending presentations from Rachel Downie, the creator of Stymie. Stymie is an online reporting system that is used to empower young people to ask for help when they need support or if they are seeing or experiencing harm. More information about Stymie can found on the following link - https://about.stymie.com.au/

Thank you to the parents and families who attended the parent and community information session on Wednesday, where Rachel Downie presented some very insightful tips for monitoring at-home use of technology and cybersafety. I look forward to seeing a positive impact on student wellbeing using Stymie.

Athletics Carnival – Field Events

With the recent changes to Queensland Education, there will be some gradual changes introduced to NICS sporting carnivals to ensure students are meeting QLD safety requirements. At the Athletics Carnival to be held next week, some changes will be made to the throwing weights for the field event apparatus to ensure students are meeting QLD safety requirements. Where there are weight discrepancies in the category, the students will throw the lower weight. With these changes, existing records prior to 2022, will stand in those events where weight changes are to occur.

If you have any questions please contact the school on 23000.
