From the Principal’s Desk
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope that all families have had a nice break together and are feeling refreshed and ready for another busy term. Term 3 sees a series of significant events, such as the Athletics Carnival, Trial HSC Examinations and Year 12 Graduation to name a few.
I would like to welcome onboard Emma-Lee Prangell, joining the NICS teams as the Guidance Officer. Emma-Lee will work with students from P-12 regarding student wellbeing and careers education. I would also like to welcome Kelly Schmitz who has joined the team as a Teacher Aid working in secondary classes.
This week, we have three students travelling to QLD to represent Norfolk Island Central School at the QLD State Cross Country Championships. I wish Koszta Deszecsar, Daniella Randall and Patrick O’Hare all the best in their events.
Next week, Ellie Dixon leaves Norfolk Island to travel to Birmingham to compete in Lawn Bowls in the Commonwealth Games. Ellie is competing in the Women’s Triples and Women’s Fours. We wish Ellie all the best in her travels and her competition.
Kind regards,
Russell Moore
Tertiary Information Week
On Wednesday, 20 July, Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 will be attending seminars with TAFE Queensland and Southern Cross University representatives to learn about post-school education options; pathways to tertiary study; accommodation and TAFE in-school courses.
On Wednesday evening there will be a parent and community information session in the English rooms at the school starting at 5:30pm. Everyone is welcome, and parents are encouraged to come along.
On Thursday, 21 and Friday, 22 July, both the TAFE and University representatives will be available for interviews at the school with students and their parents and any interested community members.
Due to the staffing challenges many employers are currently facing, we will not be having the occupation part of the Careers Market at this time. We hope to be able to do this later in the year. If you have any questions, please contact the school.
Year 10 Senior Education and Training Plan (SET Plan) – Term 3
Students in Year 10 will shortly commence the process to develop their Senior Education and Training (SET) plan under Queensland Senior Secondary Schooling. The SET plan helps students structure their senior learning around their abilities, interests and ambitions. SET Plans are reviewed at various stages throughout Year 11 and 12 to make sure subjects and learning are right for individual students, and to ensure pathways are maintained to the courses and careers students want after Year 12.
Throughout the year at NICS, Year 10 students have been provided with opportunities to explore their options through a Career Education program.
SET Plan interviews involve a representative of the school, Year 10 Parents/Carer and the student. During these interviews, students will further develop their SET Plan and solidify their senior subject choices. Parents/caregivers will be requested to attend the interviews, which will be held during Week 5 of Term 3, so that all parties can discuss and agree to the plan. It is also an opportunity for parents/caregivers and students to discuss future study and career paths. Information sessions for families will be held prior to the interviews during Week 2 of Term 3.
More information about SETP is available on the QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) website.
