NICS News – Week 4, Term 2

10 May 2024

Congratulations to the students who were presented with their ribbons from the Cross Country Carnival at Wednesday’s assembly. Once again, congratulations to Nepean House on a great result!

I look forward to the Athletics Carnival which is set for Term 3 Week 3, Wednesday, 24 July.

Best of luck to Leeloo Evans, Will Peapell and Jade Umlauft who have headed to QLD for the QLD State Golf Championships to be held next week. The students are representing Norfolk Island Central School as part of the Darling Downs South West Regional team. Best of luck and play well.

This week the Student Representative Council (SRC) held a fundraising event, “Crazy Hair and Sock Day,” to raise money for cystic fibrosis. Congratulations to the SRC for their efforts hosting the events during lunch time and stalls selling snacks. The SRC raised over $550!

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2024

Norfolk Island Central School students will join in the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 7 May to 23 August.

To complete the challenge:

  • Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
  • Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
  • Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.

Book suggestions are available on the PRC website: https://readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au/resources/book-lists

Every student who completes the challenge, and returns the completed record reader form, will receive a Certificate of Achievement. I look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge. We will be enrolling our students in this challenge in our Library classes and classes from Year 5 – Year 9 will have the option to participate by contacting either Ms Harrington or Ms Jenkins.
