Melbourne Cup week 2022

The Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday in November and this week on Tuesday 1^st November is Melbourne Cup Day, the multi $$$ million Melbourne Cup “the race that stops the nation”!

This is a famous horse race at Flemington Racetrack in Melbourne Victoria which I read started in 1861. There have been many winners over the years the first winner was Archer in 1861 and 1862, with famous horses like Far lap in 1930. The Melbourne Cup horse race is a 3200-metre race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses. This year, 2022 Melbourne Cup race is sponsored by Lexus.

Last year's winner was Verry Elleegant ,is owned by JOMARA BLOODSTOCK LTD. Chris Waller was the Australian trainer of Verry Elleegant and he claimed his first Lexus Melbourne Cup win. The jockey was James McDonald and he was over-joyed with winning the race. I loved his comment that he was blowing kisses to his horse as they raced.

Sweep stacks are a tradition for the Melbourne Cup, there are always busy volunteers in the Foodland Mall every year selling sweep stacks, and many workplaces around Australia, New Zealand run a sweep stack every year, with lucky dip horses for everyone how enters.

The Red Cross Sweepstakes will be on sale in The Norfolk Mall on Saturday 30^th October, Monday morning , 31^st October. Everyone is invited to support your local branch of Red Cross Australia.

There is race beating at the Norfolk Island RSL and if you do gamble and place a bet, please do so responsibly.

Here on Norfolk Island, there are a couple fun lunch time feasts and afternoon events planned each year. Check at the clubs and restaurants what they have planned for the day the stops the nation.

The Norfolk Island RSL Memorial Club, will host a Melbourne Cup lunch, get in early to book at table, don’t forget to wear your best Melbourne Cup clothes. Check out at the RSL for detail about the big day of races.

The Norfolk Island Leagues Club, each year the Leagues also host a function for Melbourne Cup Day. Last year they held a late long lunch, check the details at the club for information for this years 2022 Melbourne Cup Day, they normally also run a calcutta.

The Norfolk Island Bowling Club

The Bowlo will be open with their normal lunchtime menu, and if you would like to watch the race , the Melbourne Cup can be viewed on the Bowling Club television screen at the Norfolk Island Bowling Club.

During the big spring carnival festival is a week there are traditionally many events in Melbourne and the big one is race day on Tuesday. There are competitions for best dressed in the field and many elegant fashion dresses and suits will be worn on the day. Last year in 2021, Covid 19 has impacted on gatherings and interstate travel, Victoria residents had been in a very long lockdown. Regulations limited crowds on the 2021 race day. I am sure thousands will attend this year now the Covid-19 regulation have been removed.

I am sure the race will also be watched by people across Australia and across the ditch in New Zealand and around the world. I have read that in Australia, Channel 10 will be broadcasting the 2022 Melbourne Cup.
