Clarence Valley Orchestra, Clarence Valley Independent
The Clarence Valley Orchestra, a cherished 50-piece community ensemble, is preparing for its most ambitious undertaking yet, a spectacular European tour.
Having previously ventured no further than Norfolk Island, this marks an exciting new chapter for the dedicated musicians from regional NSW.
The grand tour commences in late September, with the entire 50-piece ensemble gathering in Sydney for two intensive days of rehearsals, with some Sydney players joining in.
From there, they will embark on the monumental flight to Rome, marking the start of a musical odyssey across the continent.
Their journey through Europe will then continue in comfort and style aboard a double-decker 75-seater coach, transporting them between iconic cities.
Under the skilled baton of local conductor and composer Greg Butcher, the orchestra is set to impress international audiences with a diverse repertoire.
From the timeless grandeur of classical composers like Grieg, Shostakovich, Schubert, and Strauss, to the vibrant energy of popular favourites by Cole Porter, Ennio Morricone, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Leonard Bernstein, their program promises something for every musical taste.
Adding a special local touch, the tour will also feature original compositions by Maestro Butcher himself.
Beyond their rigorous performance schedule, the musicians will also embrace the invaluable opportunity for cultural immersion.
The itinerary includes dedicated sightseeing in each destination, allowing the orchestra members to explore the historical wonders of Rome, the artistic treasures of Florence, the enchanting canals of Venice, the unique subterranean acoustics of the Postojna Caves in Slovenia, and the imperial grandeur of Vienna.
This tour is not just about performing, it’s a testament to the passion and talent residing within the Clarence Valley community, providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these regional musicians to share their artistry on a global stage.
On return from their European adventure, be sure to catch the Clarence Valley Orchestra’s upcoming concert at the Saraton Theatre in Grafton.

They will be performing with acclaimed Australian Soprano, Mirusia Louwerse, on Sunday, October 26, at 2pm.
This is a fantastic opportunity to support our local talent with scholarships and also local charities.
