The Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday in November and this week on Tuesday 7 November is Melbourne Cup Day, the multimillion Melbourne Cup “the race that stops the nation”!
This is a famous horse race at Flemington Racetrack in Melbourne Victoria which I read started in 1861. There have been many winners over the years, and the first winner was Archer in 1861 and 1862, with other famous horses like Far lap in 1930. The Melbourne Cup horse race is a 3200-metre race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses. This year, 2021 Melbourne Cup race is sponsored by Lexus, and is the second of four major meetings that make up the classic Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Last year's winner was Gold Trip, jockey Mark Zahra, his first Melbourne Cup win. I read that Gold Trip was imported by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace -trained French expat, celebrating just his second career success.
Sweepstakes is a tradition for the Melbourne Cup, there are always busy volunteers in the Foodland Mall every year selling sweepstakes, and many workplaces around Australia and New Zealand run a sweep stack every year, with lucky dip horses for everyone who enters.
The Red Cross Sweepstakes will be on sale in The Norfolk Mall on the days leading up to the Melbourne Cup. Friday 3 November, Saturday 4 November, Monday 6 November, and Tuesday 7 November from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Everyone is invited to support our local Norfolk Island branch of Red Cross Australia. Winnings may be collected in the Foodland Mall on Wednesday 8 November and Saturday 11 November from 8.30am to 12 noon.
There is TAB race beating at the Norfolk Island RSL and if you do gamble and place a bet, please do so responsibly.
Here on Norfolk Island, there are a fun lunch time feasts and afternoon events planned. If you are planning a party or joining friends at the local venues, visit the Bounty Centre and see the range of hats and fascinaters, or check out the Op Shop next to the school.
Listen to the radio or call into the venues to check details for race day.

Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday, 7 November, is a public holiday in Victoria. During the big spring carnival festival week there are traditionally many events in Melbourne and the big one is race day on Tuesday. There are competitions for best dressed in the field and many elegant fashion dresses and suits will be worn on the day.
The advertised Lexus Melbourne Cup 2023 race time is 3pm, Melbourne time. Here on Norfolk Island the race will be 4pm and I read the time in Sydney 3pm, Brisbane 2pm and New Zealand 5pm.
I am sure the race will be watched by people across Australia and across the ditch in New Zealand and around the world.
For 2023, Network 10 will be broadcasting and streaming the Lexus Melbourne Cup carnival, including Melbourne Cup Day.
If you would like to read more about the Lexus Melbourne Cup, check out this page, the Victoria Racing Club
Good luck everyone with a fun afternoon on Tuesday and remember there will also be a horse that comes last, and that one will most likely be my sweepstake horse
