This week in fishing news from Norfolk Island we’ve had more windy weather keeping most boats in their sheds but a few of us have tried our luck in the choppy conditions.
After a cold winter we’ve now got 22 degree sea temperatures surrounding us which is at least a month early. This has made for some good pelagic fishing for tuna and kingfish but the strong currents and windy weather make it difficult to bottom fish for sweetlip. Some of the better fish caught this week were some big kingfish, one going 23kg! And a monster Redthroat Sweetlip (Trumpeter) that was a staggering 8.1kg!
The warmer water has also turned the local whaler shark population into fish seeking killers, frustrating fishermen as they lose fish and tackle to the toothy tax man. Now Norfolk is about to get a bit of wind and hopefully some rain from an ex tropical cyclone that went through the Islands of Vanuatu just days ago, we won’t see any damage but it will stir up the ocean for a few days. Watch this space next week for more fishy news from Norfolk Island.
