Fiji Anniversary of Independence, 10 October 1970

14 October 2022

This week was the 52nd Anniversary of the Independence of Fiji. Fifty-two years ago, on the 10th October 1970, Prince Charles handed over the instruments of Independence to first Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, in a national ceremony at Albert Park in Suva, Fiji.

The British established the Colony of Fiji in 1874, and I have read an article titled “Fiji the Cession”, which refers to the publication by Fiji Times in October 1874. This article describes the signing of the Deed of Cession, which is the formal giving up of rights, property, or territory by the state, and describes the historic handover of Fiji to Great Britain by 13 Fijian chiefs on 10 October 1874. Upon signing the Deed of Cession document, the Fijian Chiefs gave full sovereignty to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, the Queen of England.

Fiji operated as a Crown colony until 1970, when the country gained independence as the Dominion of Fiji. On this day the Union Jack flag was lowered on the 10th October, 1970, and the Dominion of Fiji flag was hoisted. The country started its brand-new journey as an independent nation, and this was a moment of pride for all Fijians. Last weekend in Fiji along with Fijian communities around the world celebrated to mark this special occasion at church services and community gatherings. Covid-19 regulations will have restricted many of the commemorative activities, but here on Norfolk Island, the local Fijians community have celebrated this historic date with their families and friends.

In 2020, a commemorative $50 bank note, and 50 cent coin was launched to mark the Fiji’s 50th Independence Anniversary. The Fijian Prime Minister Vorege Bainimarama was one of the officials to launch the commemorative notes and coins. It was lovely to read that all Year 1 to Year 13 school children were given a commemorative 50 cent piece.

Congratulations Fiji on your Independence 52nd Anniversary, 1970 – 2022. It is wonderful that this Pacific Island has enjoyed self-governance for over half a century, and I am sure this will continue for many more generations.
