Fainting

01 November 2023

There are all sorts of reasons why we faint. Some of us may feel a little dizzy and lightheaded from time to time, sometimes light-headedness can go that bit too far and we end up fainting. Fainting can be a common occurrence, but nonetheless it is concerning to see someone collapse in front of you with no warning. Passing out, blacking out, a sudden loss of consciousness; this partial or complete loss of consciousness is caused because your brain does not get enough oxygen rich blood flow.

Signs and symptoms of fainting:

The casualty may:
• Lose consciousness/feel light-headed - Feel dizzy or have vertigo, have faded or blurred vision - Feel nauseated, have a pale, cool moist skin - Have numbness in the fingers and toes.

WHAT TO DO:

As always, check for any danger to yourself, or the casualty.

If the patient is unconscious, call triple zero (000) immediately. If the patient is not breathing, begin CPR.

When we faint, it is usually because our brains do not, (or perceive they are not) getting enough oxygen. If someone has fainted, make them as comfortable as possible, lie them flat on their back (not sitting up and not with their head between legs) and consider, if possible, raising their legs slightly. This will help return blood flow to the head. Loosen any tight clothing and if in the elements, move to a shady place with plenty of fresh air. Fainting can be caused by all number of causes, emotional stress, dehydration, exhaustion, standing still for too long in hot conditions, sight of blood or even just standing up too quickly, particularly in the elderly or pregnant.

Seek Medical Assistance When:

If a person stops breathing, or does not rouse from a fainting episode, seek medical help immediately, If in doubt, ring 000 (Triple Zero).
