Switch off for the “Biggest Hour for Earth” at 8.30 pm local time, Saturday 23 March 2024.
This weekend on 23 March is the annual Earth Hour event. It is an opportunity for friends and family around the world to join the lights-off event to raise awareness about climate change and to share the movement to protect our planet and its incredible nature.
On Saturday 23 March, 8:30pm local time, please switch off your lights for one hour, if you can do so safely. Earth Hour is held worldwide annually, encouraging individuals, communities’ households, and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights, not lights that affect public safety, for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. Around the world many communities and city buildings will be doing the same. Imagine the difference it would make if everyone reduced the use of wasteful lighting.
We are lucky on Norfolk Island to know the wonders of the magical night skies, but many areas in the world do not see the stars above, where they are surrounded in pollution, so many people in never see the galaxies and stars.
Starting as a symbolic light out event in Sydney in 2007, WWF’s Earth Hour has grown to become the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 180 countries and territories to take action for our shared home.
Join in Earth Hour on Saturday 23 March 2024, but take care in your own home. Use common sense with respect to safety. Keep small night lights on for basic safety especially in halls and on stairs. Make sure you have alternative light sources handy before Earth Hour starts, like torches or flashlights. That way if you need to see, you have a light source close at hand, and you can still respect the spirit of Earth Hour and keep yourself and your family safe.
If you use candles, please remember to use them safely. Here are a few safety tips when using candles. Candles should only be used under adult supervision and should never be left unattended Always kept them away from children and pets. Remember to extinguish candles before going to sleep and keep candles away from flammable liquids and gas-combustible materials. Candles should be kept clear of any combustible materials such as paper, curtains, and clothing. Candles should be placed on a stable, dry, heat-resistant surface away from drafts.Candles should not be placed in windows as they can be blown over. Blinds and curtains can also catch alight.
Remember to switch off your lights in solidarity with global efforts to protect our planet and its biodiversity on 23 March, 8:30pm your time!
