Community advised to stop using any affected decorative and coloured sand products immediately
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued recall notices for a range of decorative and coloured sand products that may contain asbestos. These products could be on Norfolk Island after being imported from mainland Australia.
The products have been recalled as testing has detected asbestos in some samples. The Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC) urges the community to follow these safety steps:
•
Stop using any affected decorative or coloured sand products immediately.
•
If the sand remains in its original packaging: Place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely with double tape, label it clearly, and store in a safe, secure location.
•
For areas where the sand has been used: Clean up using wet cloths to prevent dust. Wear gloves, a mask, and disposable coveralls. Once cleaned, double bag the sand, with the used gloves, mask, coveralls, and cloths, then store securely.
•
Keep children and others away from affected areas until fully cleaned.
•
Do not dispose of the sand in household waste. Contact Customer Care: call 22001 or 0100, or email: customercare@nirc.gov.nf before visiting for disposal instructions.
•
If unsure or needing expert guidance, contact a qualified asbestos professional on the island.
The Australian Government's Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency states: “Although there have been early indications that the risk of exposure is low, it is important to take precautions with all potential exposures.
It is important to note that not everyone exposed to asbestos will develop an asbestos-related disease, but that the risk increases with every exposure, so it is important to take control to minimise further exposure.
Based on the currently available information it is recommended that clinical assessment for those who may have been in contact with this product is not required.”
