Community Update — February 2026

The Government of Norfolk Island (GNI) provides the following update as we move into the next phase of establishing a community-led government for Norfolk Island.

Progress Update

In recent weeks, the GNI has been focused on finalising the core governance documents that inform our processes and operations, and what we seek to achieve in this term in office. This essential framework – that sets out how decisions are made, how authority rests with the people, and how direct democracy operates in practice - is now close to completion and will be released publicly ahead of formal adoption.

Community Access & the GNI Hub

The GNI Hub will shortly be operational and serve as a practical point of contact between the GNI and the community where community members can:

  • View and discuss GNI documents
  • Register interest in committees and roles
  • Register to be included on the GNI Electoral Roll

Details on access times will be published in our next update.

Communication Channels

Dedicated GNI communication channels, including a website and social media platforms, are being developed to improve community connection via:

  • Regular updates
  • Access to key documents
  • Clear pathways for community participation

First Public Meeting

Preparations continue for the GNI’s first formal public meeting, which will mark the commencement of GNI operations in a public setting.

At this meeting, the GNI expects to:

  • Officially adopt its core governance charter and framework
  • Formally establish mechanisms for key committees to get GNI work operational
  • Confirm priorities for the coming months

The meeting will also include a cultural component recognising the significance of this step for Norfolk Island as a people. Details will be announced once final arrangements are confirmed.

Looking Ahead

Alongside this local work, the GNI is also beginning to engage with regional and international partners to build an aligned network of support to help us achieve Norfolk Island’s longer-term aspirations. Thank you for your continued patience as we get these critical foundational arrangements in place first to pave the way for open communication, steady progress, and meaningful community involvement to move us forward, together.
