Cascade Motors TIME FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER 2023

09 November 2023

This week I spotted an exciting post on Facebook, Norfolk Island Business page.

The post was regarding Cascade Motors along with the history of Cottee’s factory, a big part of Norfolk Island history from the 1930s. There were great images also posted of the factory, the workers and passionfruit which was used to make the famous soft drink called “Passiona”.

An interesting old piece of machinery, a beautiful old Steam Engine, has been found down the hillside in the valley behind Cascade Motors and it has been retrieved and is now on display at the petrol station.

As detailed below, they are interested in the history of the factory and if you would like to share any photographs or stories of that time, they would love to hear from you. Call into Cascade Motors and have a chat. Their aim is to put a plaque at Cascade Motors explaining the history.

In recent months they have been cleaning out everything, workshop and shop area at Cascade Motors. The plan is to re-branding and re-creating Cascade Motors, and they would like to give the petrol station and garage a new name and they welcome any suggestions and have decided to have a competition for the:

Best New Name Suggestion?

The first prize $251 Voucher

The two runner-up prizes $100 voucher each.

Here is a copy of the post from Facebook last week, posted by Lisa Woodward on 4 November 2023. Greg Camp, Rebecca Nobbs.

Greg and I are very excited to be taking on the Management of Station in Burnt Pine.

There is a lot of history for our family with the petrol station and the block of land which is where the original Cottee’s factory was built and manufactured in the 1930s. Many of the Norfolk Islanders were employed by Cottee’s until it closed down.

We are hoping some of you may have noticed the beautiful old Steam Engine we were able to dig up from the Valley behind and now placed her proudly on display in the front. She was originally transported here for the Cottee’s factory to assist with manufacturing the passionfruit used to make the soft drink called Passiona which made them famous.

Our aim is to put a plaque there explaining her history. Any comments or stories of that time we

would love you to share.

The photos are when the petrol station was originally being built before Pete’s Place was thought of and with Barrett’s in the background. If anyone has any old photos, we reach out to you to share.

We are also very pleased to appoint Bec Nobbs as the new manager and to help us with bringing the old girl back to life. That’s the petrol station, not me.

After many months of cleaning out everything we can now look forward to re branding and re creating, increased opening hours and a new energy.

So, the first thing we would like to do is to give her a new name.

We welcome any suggestions and can’t wait to hear what you come up with.

For Best New Name Suggestion $251 Voucher

And 2 runners up at $100 voucher each.

Don’t hold back. Quirky. Queer. A little fun. A connection with Norfolk or history.

Just add your suggestion below and we appreciate your creativity.

Attached are copies of the photos from the social media page on Facebook and also a couple I took during the week of Cascade Motors and the amazing old steam engine.
