Bean Community Update

02 November 2022

Last week, the Albanese Labor Government delivered our first Budget.

I am proud to be part of the Government, which is delivering on our election promises and setting up Canberrans and Australians for a better future.

This Budget delivers for Canberrans, helping them manage cost of living pressures and plan for the future, with:

  • cheaper child care, that will see 6,600 families (96 per cent) in Bean better off
  • cheaper medicine, saving people up to $450 a year
  • expanding Paid Parental Leave to six months
  • 10 days paid family and domestic violence leave
  • more affordable housing
  • funding to establish the National Anti-Corruption Commission, and
  • fee free TAFE and 345 more university places at the ANU and UC.

Canberra and the electorate of Bean have been overlooked for nearly ten years. Our Budget provides funding for the commitments to deliver local projects that we promised, including:

  • a Community Battery in Fadden
  • new & upgraded tennis courts at the Weston Creek Tennis Club
  • $10 million to fund the Youth Foyer at Woden CIT
  • significant funding for local waterways.

Proudly, we are rebuilding the Public Service with over 7,000 new APS jobs after nine years of cuts, that embodies integrity, has the capability to do its job well, and puts people and businesses at the centre of policy and services.

This Budget is a responsible budget for the current economic climate and prepares our city and the country for the future.

Kind regards,
David Smith MP
