IPWEA - Energy Efficient Lighting for communities

Dr Kellie Pendoley is an inspiration with her conservation work with protecting our Dark Skies and protecting Sea Turtles. Kellie has supported and encouraged myself and others to protect our Norfolk Island Magical Dark Skies and she is always there to share her expertise regarding light pollution and has also taught me about protecting our dark skies. Kellie has also shared her knowledge about the sea turtles in our Kingston lagoon and around the Norfolk Island coastal area.

I first met Kellie in 2015, and I attended a gathering to promote protecting Norfolk Island Magical Dark Skies and to work towards lighting policies for Norfolk island with the aim to apply to the IDA for Norfolk Island to become an International Dark Sky Community. This would protect Norfolk Island from unnecessary lighting, thus protecting our dark skies for future generations, our environment, human health, marine life and bird life. Plus, this would be another positive for Astro-tourism as many people in the world have never seen the Milky-Way, which we are so privileged to enjoy here on Norfolk Island.

We all marvel at the brilliant starry nights with the Milky Way and galaxies shining brightly from the heavens above Norfolk Island. I call this “Our Norfolk Island Magical Dark Skies”. It is a sight that many in the world never see and is an asset we need to protect for future generations. Here on Norfolk Island, we are privileged to have limited public lighting, and it is important we all consider correct lighting when installing and upgrading any lights around our homes or businesses. It takes a community as well as the council to protect and reduce light pollution. The aim of the project is to protect Our Norfolk Island Magical Dark Skies by limiting light pollution when planning any future developments.

For many years, I have been promoting and encouraging NIRC and the Norfolk Island community to set goals so we can apply for International Dark Sky Community, so if everyone helps and reduces light pollution, this will protect Our Norfolk Island Magical Dark Skies. Let’s all get together and protect and enjoy Our Norfolk Island Magical Dark Skies. Attached are some of my photos of starry nights.

Don’t forget to register for this month’s Webinar with Dr Kellie Pendoley on Tuesday 14 October 2025.
