The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has assisted the Fiji Police Force to bring to justice a perpetrator who was involved in an unauthorised sharing of intimate photos and videos online.

In a recent case, a Fijian national was sentenced to two years, two months, and two weeks in jail by the Suva Magistrate’s Court for violating Section 377 of the Fiji Crimes Act 2009, which pertains to obscene publication.

The investigation was initiated in January, 2023 when a Norfolk Island resident reported that intimate material of herself was shared through Facebook messenger.

The Norfolk Island Police Force (NIPF) — including AFP members — commenced the investigation and identified the offender who was based in Fiji.

The case was handed over to Fiji’s cybercrime team, which worked closely with the digital forensic team and AFP members based in Suva.

The Fiji police executed a search warrant at the offender’s residence in Nasinu, resulting in his arrest.

Various electronic devices containing incriminating materials and evidence were confiscated during the operation.

Last week, in recognition of his leadership in the investigation, detective Corporal Joni Naitini of the police cybercrime team received a Certificate of Recognition from AFP.

Adrian Morton, a senior officer with the AFP, expressed pride in the successful investigation outcome, emphasising the strong relationships between the AFP, Norfolk Island Police Force, and Fiji Police Force.

The AFP has provided training and digital forensic tools, through the Cyber Safety Pasifika program, to assist law enforcement agencies across the Pacific region in combatting cyber and technology-related offending.

Fiji’s acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, highlighted the longstanding partnership built on mutual trust, respect, and the shared
pursuit of justice.
