Belinda Biggs Painting Holiday 2019

Thursday, October 10, 2019

This week the Norfolk Island Travel Centre has again welcomed Belinda Biggs and an enthusiastic group of artists to the island for her annual ‘Belinda Biggs Norfolk Island Painting Holiday’. Inspired by the Island’s natural beauty Belinda has again shared her love of Norfolk with her students who have enjoyed exploring the island, painting and drawing the stunning scenery and flora & fauna with Watercolours, Coloured Pencils, Pen & Wash, Graphite or Pastels.

This year Belinda’s booked out group consisted of 12 painters and also some non-painters.  They’ve had a busy week of painting, dining, and touring while staying at Aloha Apartments. In between painting workshops in picturesque placements around Norfolk, the group managed to also enjoy some sightseeing, local shopping and general relaxation.

Belinda is a leading Australian botanical artist, internationally recognised for her wildlife and botanical art and also well known and awarded in other genre painting and drawing work. Her painting NSW Waratah exhibited in the prestigious ‘Focus on Nature XIII’ at the New York State Museum was acquired for their permanent collection, and she was subsequently invited to submit another work for their next exhibition.  In addition Belinda has been included in the German publication, ‘Who’s Who in Visual Arts – 50 Masters of Realistic Imagery’! As an artist she is passionate about Norfolk; “I just love it, everywhere you look there is something to be painted”.

We wish Belinda and her group all the best in their future artistic endeavours and look forward to welcoming Belinda back with another keen group of artists in the future.

St George’s School Conservation Project

Thursday, October 03, 2019

This week Norfolk Island hosted a group of volunteer students on a conservation excursion. The girls from St George Girls High School, along with teachers Diane Duffy, Krystina Macready & Tina Whitehead, have spent the week working with the Norfolk Island National Parks, and local landowners to educate the students on looking at island sustainability through social, cultural, economic, political and environmental lenses.

After arriving the group were welcomed before checking in to Hibiscus Crown Apartments, their first evening was filled with an island familiarisation tour with Marg Christan and dinner at the Bowling Club. The rest of the week the ladies were involved in Conservation Projects with Norfolk Island National Parks, potting many native plants as well as a clean-up on beautiful Anson Bay and Cemetery Beach.

Working with the Norfolk Island National Park team, students took part in restoration projects to protect critically endangered ecosystems. Students were taught that Norfolk Island is a biodiversity hotspot with endemic plant species being rescued from extinction. Students also enjoyed helping Mervyn Buffett with regeneration work in his ‘fairy glen’ pocket of land, filled with plants of high conservation value.

Visiting the Bureau of Meteorology gave the students an in-depth experience of weather science and how forecasts are made using aligned data gathered from around the world to inform all aspects of human life. Students even visited the Waste Management Centre, attending a tour of the facility from PJ Wilson showed the students how Norfolk values recycling and sustainability.

After invitation, the group of students attended the Norfolk Island People for Democracy (NIPD) to learn about the complex relationship Norfolk Islanders have had with Australian Governance and laws over the years and their ongoing plight to maintain self-determination and cultural identity in a world of increasing globalisation. The students were shown around places of cultural and historical significance to piece together the disconnected settlements of Norfolk Island and how the island has come to be the place it is today.

During one of the evenings the students were treated to a live performance at the Norfolk Island Theatre Festival. A social game of netball with a local team of similar aged school students was enjoyed followed by an evening of wood fired pizzas at the Castaway Hotel.

As we say goodbye to these conservation students, from everyone at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre we wish all the students and St George Girls High School a wonderful trip and a safe journey home. We say thank you for the good environmental work you have undertaken for our Island and also genuinely connecting with our community and way of life. We hope to see you back on island again one day soon. The future is in good hands with these young adults.

Spring Ukulele Festival

Friday, September 20, 2019

The Norfolk Island Travel Centre was thrilled this week to welcome 44 visiting ukulele players travelling to Norfolk to participate in the Spring Norfolk Island Ukulele Festival. Their hosts the Norfolk Island Uke Band led by Don Reynolds have presented a week of playing, learning and performing mixed together with terrific meals, socialising and activities.

We hope that playing uke’s at places such as the Sunday markets, beside the sparkling waters at Emily Bay, at Kingston’s Old Government House site, during the Yuukalieli Showcase at Seventh Day Adventist Hall, and during workshops at Tampali have been not only entertaining but inspiring.

The cultural mix of this Festival is fantastic. Aussies, Kiwi’s and Norfolk Islanders have all exchanged music, cultural traditions, languages, singing and dancing this week. It’s hard to think of a more enjoyable holiday than attending a Norfolk Island Ukulele Festival! We wish all the players a safe trip home and hope to see you back, with your uke, on Norfolk Island again one day soon.

Southern Lightscapes Photography Tour with Ian Rolfe

Friday, September 20, 2019

Travel experiences truly come into their own when you have a camera in your hands and you can actually capture the essence of the fantastic locations you visit. A lucky group of aspiring photographer’s learnt how to encapsulate the best of Norfolk Island from the best this week on Ian Rolfe’s annual Southern Lightscapes Photography Tour.

Together with the Norfolk Island Travel Centre, Ian has been bringing groups to Norfolk for many years - as he says “I absolutely love Norfolk Island, and it’s assuredly my favourite South Pacific destination”. It’s always wonderful to welcome back Ian Rolfe to Norfolk Island and with this being his 17th trip to the Island, he is not only a wonderful friend to the Island but also knows the greatest places to follow the sun and stars around the island to get that perfect shot. Most days the group have captured first morning light, afternoon shadows and dusky evenings as a backdrop to dramatic seascapes, rolling valleys, historic buildings, our fauna and flora. Photos taken during these some thirty sessions have then been worked on in the evenings over workshops on editing and constructive feedback from Ian. In between taking photos the group has also enjoyed a number of tours including the Half Day Island Tour, Progressive Diner, and a photoshoot with locally produced lunch at the Hilli Goat Farm.

Members of the group commented on their early morning shoot at Cemetery Bay that they learn so much from shooting with such an experienced photographer who ‘knows the land’. There are bound to be some very impressive photos of Norfolk Island being taken home by each person in this group.

Copies of Ian’s personally signed book ‘Norfolk Island Ian Rolfe Photography’ are available at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre office opposite the RSL and sell for $59. They are a beautiful coffee table book and an excellent present for friends and family both on and off-Island. Please call in to view a copy.

From Karen and the Norfolk Island Travel Centre team, we say it’s been wonderful to welcome you back Ian and we wish you and your group and safe journey home and look forward to welcoming you back again one day soon.

Silkwood School Year 10 Camp - Conservation Expedition

Thursday, September 12, 2019

Watawieh! Our Silkwood School year 10 students have been warmly welcomed to Norfolk Island. Our group flew in on Saturday the 7th of September, travelling from the Gold Coast. We have loved becoming immersed in the interesting history, culture, and community network on the island. Our camp is focused on looking at island sustainability through social, cultural, economic, political and environmental lenses.

Our students have been lucky enough to participate in a broad range of eye-opening experiences, one of which being a visit to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). Adam gave an engaging explanation of several aspects of meteorology, and an understanding of the impacts of climate change and variation. We were also invited by the Norfolk Island People for Democracy (NIPD) to learn about Islander’s complex relationship with Australian Governance and laws. Students were fascinated and found themselves deeply impacted by the information.

On Tuesday night, our group had the opportunity to prepare and take part in a cultural feast facilitated by Jodie Williams and her family. Students loved creating and trying several unique cultural islander dishes. A few nights later, we also got to watch and partake in cultural dancing and weaving. This was a fantastic experience as part of our cultural learning, and we were privileged to gain an insight into the Tahitian influences and Island traditions from Jodie. On Wednesday, we joined Norfolk Island Public School students in their sports activities of fishing and golfing. Both groups had a great time connecting with other students their age whilst learning through new activities.

All week we have been shown around areas with cultural and historical significance by locals to the community, learning about the Island’s multifaceted history. As part of our environmental sustainability and community education, students have been volunteering with Norfolk Island National Parks, where we were able to plant 450 seedlings, and plant and mulch just under 400 plants in a section of the park. We have also worked with island elder Merv Buffet and enjoyed helping with restoration work in his ‘fairy glen’ filled with plants of high conservation value. We loved jumping in the back of the trucks to go visit Merv’s plentiful gardens and learn about their botanical history.

After spending 8 days on the island, our group will be flying home on Saturday the 14th of September. As we say goodbye to this beautiful island, we would like to thank Joyce and everyone at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre for organising the travel arrangements and itinerary. We would also like to thank all the community members who volunteered their time to enrich our students with their local knowledge. We have loved being able to engage and learn from community members, and are incredibly grateful for the experiences we have gained.

By Zara McConachy, year 12 student leader and Silkwood School Youth Ambassador.

“We wish all the students and Silkwood School a wonderful trip and a safe journey home. We say thank you for the good environmental work you have undertaken for our Island and also genuinely connecting with our community and way of life. We hope to see you back on island again one day soon. The future is in good hands with these young adults”

Norfolk Island : The Ideal Bowls Holiday

Friday, August 02, 2019

Only two hours flight from Australia, Norfolk Island is a lawn bowls paradise and after winning two gold and two silver medals at the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games the world now knows it too! There must be something in the water at the local Norfolk Island Bowling Club with their representative competitors exceeding all expectations at the Games. For years Norfolk Island has been renowned as the friendliest island in the South Pacific which the club slogan sums up nicely as “there are no strangers in this club, only friends you haven’t met”. Locals find genuine pleasure in welcoming visiting bowlers, sometimes returning every year for their favourite tournament. It’s easy to see why Norfolk Island draws bowlers of all skill level to their tournaments.

It doesn’t take long for visitors to slip into Norfolk mode after they arrive. The airport is 5 minutes away so you can deplane, collect your bags, book in and be on the green within an hour of arrival if you choose! The Norfolk Island Bowling Club is located in the heart of town with a few accommodation options close-by so you can choose whether you drive after play. As a golden rule most things are 5 minutes, maximum 10 minutes away from the Bowling Club! There’s no such thing as traffic jams on Norfolk in fact the island has no traffic lights, one roundabout and locking your car is optional.

Norfolk Island enjoys a sub-tropical climate and the Norfolk Island Bowling Club makes the most of it with three main tournaments scheduled in the year, appealing to bowlers in three different ways as Pairs, Triples and Fours events. The Club’s longest standing signature event, the Bounty Bowls Tournament is on in May (May 03 - 08 Open Fours and 11 - 14 May 2020 Mixed Fours). 2020 will be the 59th Bounty Bowls Tournament. NIO Classic Triples 16 - 21 August 2020, has men’s or ladies teams and a minimum of five qualifying rounds. The South Pacific Pairs is an open comp for men’s, women or mixed pairs and runs 17 - 21 February 2020. Of course bowlers are welcome to travel as a group or individually.

The Norfolk tournaments give bowlers, family and friends the perfect excuse to combine bowls with a holiday. Norfolk Island is a fascinating destination offering a pristine environment with lots to see and do around tournament times. The beauty of the Island is renowned with its tall majestic pines, high rising cliffs, green undulating valleys, lush rainforest and brilliant turquoise waters over coral reefs. Many visitors report experiencing a  feeling of ‘coming home’ perhaps to a way of life they knew from years ago with a relaxed pace, a sense of quiet, genuine friendliness, attention to life customs and community. Tours and activities on offer include 4WD tours, Glass-Bottom Boats, eco-tours, progressive dinners to island homes, museums and heritage tours, sunset fish frys, golf, art trails and cottage industries. Norfolk’s fishing is renowned for every trip coming home with a great catch, such as Kingfish, Silver Trevally, Amberjack and Sweetlip (Red Throat Emperor).

The Norfolk Island Bowling Club invites bowlers to join them for one of their annual or at any other time of year either individually or with a group. Traveling as with friends or fellow Club members for a social bowls holiday has some great incentives with some accommodation properties offering a 1 in 11 stay free deal. Local bowlers love any opportunity to mix, mingle and roll up with bowlers and invite visitors to travel over any time of year.

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear gardening gloves!

Friday, July 19, 2019

Following the sad closure of the Wild Mob conservation project, there was the possibility that we would lose this valuable program that is such a support to our island’s conservation efforts. In this case, National Parks stepped up to lead project activities alongside local Margaret Christian and long term volunteer Mark Hallam.

Five adventurous volunteers volunteered their time last week to clean up our environment and return precious habitat for our endangered and endemic species. Over the week they worked on the Norfolk Island fauna, flora, monitoring, weeding and planting mainly at Captain Cooks Monument. The tight knit group reportedly planted over 300 native plants at Cooks Monument including planting native Flax plants next to the track to the Cooks Lookout. They also spent their time exhaustively weeding Coral Berry, Hawaiian Holly and African Olive weeds from the bush at Cooks Monument.

Outside Captain Cook’s Lookout, Mervyn Buffett’s private ‘Fairy Glen’ Conservation Area also had the benefit of their attention and the volunteers were treated to Merv’s wonderful fruit and veg. This was a great opportunity for these visitors to go onto a private property and engage with real locals. In addition to their conservation tasks the team attended a Half Day Island Tour, The Norfolk Whey Hilli Goat Farm Tour Including a light luncheon and glass of wine, and a farewell dinner at Paradise Hotel. Luckily the group was blessed with beautiful weather but plans were made ahead of time in case they weren’t so lucky. Helen Bracken had a backup plan of private tours and activities down at the museum if the weather turned south.

As we say goodbye to these volunteer conservation visitors, from everyone at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre we wish all the volunteers a wonderful trip and a safe journey home. We say thank you for the good environmental work you have undertaken for our Island and hope to see you back on island again one day soon.

It's time to book your Spring Bird Watching Holiday on Norfolk Island

Thursday, July 11, 2019

November is just around the corner and time is running out to plan and book your trip to this year’s Norfolk Island Bird Week. Norfolk Island's premier event for bird watchers, hear from the Island's local bird experts and take part in a census of endangered and endemic species.

The Norfolk Island Group is a globally important biodiversity hotspot and has been designated as an ‘Important Bird Area’ by Birdlife International. Launch of new web site for Norfolk Island Travel Centre

Friday, June 28, 2019

Norfolk Island’s leading on-island wholesaler and retailer of Holiday Packages for event, group and escorted travel is Norfolk Island Travel Centre and they are proud to announce the launch of a newly redesigned website at https://www.norfolkislandtravelcentre.com/.  For over 35 years Norfolk Island Travel Centre (NITC) has specialised in promoting and bringing visitors to their island home.

The new site features a streamlined, cleaner design with improved functionality and access to the travel information visitors are seeking.  Overall it will help potential visitors to choose Norfolk Island as their preferred travel destination and move through making initial enquiries to bookings.

NITC owner Rebecca Christian feels a special responsibility, drive and pride in bringing visitors to her Island home. Growing up, living and raising a family within the small, tightly connected community of Norfolk Island means she not only knows the island well, but also where to go and who to engage to bring to life new events and group and escorted travel to the Island. Employing staff who are either also born-and-bred on Norfolk or have lived there for many years, has resulted in team-knowledge that is second to none and a genuine opportunity for visitors to ‘meet the locals’.

“We are ‘Real People’ and ‘Real Locals’ who seek to create ‘Real Experiences’ for our clients. As passionate locals we genuinely want them to love our Island, its people and experiences as much as we do. We understand that journey begins before they even arrive, via our website. We are thrilled to debut our new website which reflects our knowledge of the island and the personable service that you will receive when you book with us.”

The new website brings together every aspect of planning a Norfolk Island holiday into one space. Users have the ability to browse;

Norfolk Island Travel Centre’s connection with local businesses provides exclusive savings on travel packages that they pass on to their customers. Highly valuing its community responsibilities NITC works closely with the Islands sporting, arts, music, service and other clubs to support the annual events they run.

NITC's new website will be updated on a regular basis with news of exclusive travel deals, new event promotion and Norfolk Island news. Visitors are encouraged to explore the website and sign up for Norfolk Island Travel Centres’ eNewsletter and receive regular direct information.

Rebecca says: “As a seventh generation descendant of Fletcher Christian operating a locally run business, my colleagues and I are not only dedicated to promoting our island home – it’s our passion”

Social Ballroom dancing at its best, here on Norfolk Island.

Friday, June 28, 2019

This week we welcomed 93 dancers to Norfolk Island to take part in the legendary Norfolk Island Social Ballroom Dancing Week. There's a reason why this event sell's out year after year months in advance. As with past years there were many dancers who returned to the Island for the week, and they were joined by a number of first time visiting dancers.

Dancers were treated to a week of dancing workshops, socialising, themed dinner dances and amazing costumes! Over 6 workshops dancers learnt new choreography with returning coaches Jan Lawrence and Tanya Kershaw. Since they visited themselves and fell in love with our island, Jan and Tanya have returned to teach ballroom each year for 23 years.

At night dancers attended 5 evening dances, including this year’s themed night ‘Purple & Blue’.  Rawson Hall was transformed into a blue and purple wonderland, with blue trees and shrubbery it was like something out of a Dr Seuss book. The dancers really outdid themselves this year and dug deep into their creative imaginations for some awesome outfits. Many recognisable characters made an appearance including the Joker, Popeye and Olive, Mad Hatter, B1 & B2, plus Doctors, Nurses and Police Officers. Congratulations to the Best Dressed winners.

Dancers pulled out their best frocks and dancing shoes for the favourite Farewell Supper Ball where they waltzed, tangoed, Cha Cha’ed, Rhumbaed and danced the night away.

At the end of an incredible week of dancing, dressing up, socialising and touring, Helen and all the team at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre wish this year’s visiting dancers a safe journey home. It has been such a pleasure to welcome you to this special year of Social Ballroom Dancing on Norfolk Island – and we look forward to seeing you back here again, places are already filling up for next year. Shall we waltz into 2020?

Welcome back to Joy Adams

Friday, May 24, 2019

Joy Adams really needs no introduction to kiwi country music fans. She’s a multi-award winning performer, regularly appearing at festivals and showcases throughout NZ, Australia and further afield. Blessed with a natural flair for comedy, singing and song writing, her first album included NZCMA’s Best Country Song: ‘Come Home Baby Darling’ and she recently released her 16th Album: ‘In His Loving Car’.

We were thrilled when Joy agreed to escort a trip for the festival this year as well as perform a number of times during the week. Arriving on one of the charter flights Joy’s group of seventeen NZ country music fans have loved staying at Burnt Pine Boutique Apartments.  Their week got off to an excellent start with some delicious food at a welcome dinner at Paradise Hotel.

The next day Joy’s performance at the Kiwi Lunch at Paradise Hotel was well received – what a great lunch and time to savour the combined talents of the performers. Dinner at the Bowling Club finished off the weekend with everyone ready for the Festival to start. During the Festival Joy joined in at a great gig at the RSL on Monday, as well as Twilight Gigs at the RSL on Wednesday and Friday. An Island Fish Fry was enjoyed by all also during this busy week.

Welcome back to Dennis Marsh

Friday, May 24, 2019

Dennis is of course New Zealand’s best-selling country music artist, well known for hosting the TV show ‘My Country Song’ and a series of popular albums. No stranger to Norfolk Island, he has performed and escorted numerous groups to our Country Music Festivals over the years – indeed it’s almost impossible to imagine it without him! This year Dennis escorted twenty-two in his group, who all had a brilliant week of music and fun.

Arriving on Saturday’s charter flight and staying at Aloha Apartments on their first night the group enjoyed the delicious flavours of their meal at The Local. On Sunday Dennis was of course in the line-up at the Kiwi Country Music Concert and Lunch – such a great time and enjoyed by all in the group. Also dining at the Bowling Club on Sunday night, everyone went to bed well primed for the Festival performances to begin the next day.

Many in the group joined other tours and activities in addition to the Festival performances and an Island Fish Fry dinner. It’s been a busy week for the group, who no doubt will return home today having thoroughly enjoyed their Norfolk Island Country Music Festival experience escorted by Dennis.

Inspired by Norfolk’s natural beauty Belinda Biggs is once again set to share her love of the Island when she tutors artists during her 4 – 11 October 2019 Belinda Biggs Norfolk Island Painting Holiday.

Belinda is a leading Australian botanical artist who has been riding high on the crest of amazing artistic success. Not only has she been internationally recognised for her wildlife and botanical art, but is also well known and awarded in other genre painting and drawing work. Her painting NSW Waratah, exhibited in the prestigious ‘Focus on Nature XIII’ at the New York State Museum was recently acquired by the museum for their permanent collection and she was subsequently invited to submit another work for their next exhibition.  In addition, she has been included in the German publication, ‘Who’s Who in Visual Arts – 50 Masters of Realistic Imagery’. Follow that Bird - with Janene Luff

Friday, March 15, 2019

A group of keen bird watchers have just completed a short-break bird-watching trip with Follow that Bird led by owner Janene Luff and organised in combination with the Norfolk Island Travel Centre. Janene has been offering high-quality birding tours since 1994, mostly around the Sydney region as well as escorting overseas tours. It was a pleasure to welcome Janene back to Norfolk leading this 2019 trip.

Arriving last Monday the group didn’t waste a moment by heading straight to Hilli’s to enjoy a late lunch before relaxing for the evening at their accommodation at Castaway Norfolk Island. With sighting a Green Parrot high on the wish list, we are pleased to say sightings were made! Walks on the Bridal Track and guided tours with Margaret Christian identified land based birds while a Pelagic Boat Trip with David Bigg enabled sightings of many seabirds.

Flying back to Sydney on Friday, we hope that Janene and her group felt they had made the most of their short-break to ‘follow the birds’ of Norfolk Island. On behalf of Karen Buffett and all the Norfolk Island Travel Centre team we say thank you to Janene for choosing to bring a group to Norfolk and we hope to see you back again one day soon.

Will you be the one to spot a White-breasted White-eye?

Friday, February 22, 2019

During Norfolk Island Bird Week in November this year, participants will be included in a census of some of Norfolk’s endangered bird species, which may hopefully include sighting of a White-breasted White-eye. With no confirmed sightings made in the last 20 years,  if it was to be found it would be stunning to be able to place it in the endangered – but not extinct – category.

Norfolk Island never fails to disappoint bird watchers and Bird Week is the only opportunity to attend presentations by local expert Margaret Christian, Dr. Derek Ball WildMob Director and Chair of Island Arks Australia, as well as park rangers undertaking hands-on work securing the Green parrot and other vulnerable species.

Taking up the Optional extras to visit Phillip Island and join a Pelagic boat tour place this week as an extraordinary Bird Week experience.

Keeping the Community Informed - Sussan Ley

Thursday, October 25, 2018

Dear residents

I am looking forward to visiting the Island which I can now confirm will be from 12-16 November 2018. My trip will include a visit to key tourism destinations, including the Norfolk Island National Park and the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area (KAVHA). I know that KAVHA is a massive drawcard for national and international tourism, and that many tourists say that this is the main reason they become interested in visiting Norfolk. I would like to hear more about the community involvement and collaborative partnerships that have a positive impact on the sustainability of KAVHA going forward.

In good news for tourism, the custom-built passenger transfer vessels are on track to be delivered to Norfolk Island in mid-2019 in readiness for the 2019-20 cruise ship season. The vessels will be used to transfer passengers from the ships to the pier at either Cascade or Kingston. This will mean that cruise ships don’t need to use their own boats and should increase the numbers of cruise ship passengers that can visit Norfolk Island.

The first of the three vessels is nearing completion, with sea trials happening in the coming weeks. Design is also underway for the modifications to the roads which are necessary for the safe movement of the vessels to and from Cascade Pier.

I am disappointed to hear that the Pacific Explorer was not able to disembark passengers onto the Island last week. Cruise ship visits are a huge economic opportunity for the community and a fantastic time to showcase the local heritage and culture. I hope the new passenger transport vessels may assist with more frequent visits from cruise ship passengers.

I understand there are several projects that are likely to start in the Kingston area in the coming months. Some of these focus on improving the appeal of KAVHA to tourists.

Across the road from the golf club, a damaged roof of the duplex will be replaced, using Norfolk pine shingles. This is a great opportunity to showcase the traditional trades of Norfolk Island.

Preparations are underway to improve access to the disabled toilets near Slaughter Bay, which will improve the visitor experience to KAVHA.

A project aimed at replacing old and poorly functioning sewage transfer and storage infrastructure in Kingston will also commence soon. This project will improve the quality of water flowing into Emily Bay, helping protect the health of residents and tourists who swim in the area. The reduction in pollution will also help protect the environment in the Norfolk Island Marine Reserve.

The retaining wall at Cemetery Bay will also be rehabilitated, using timber and other materials that are similar to the existing structure.

Don’t forget that Round 3 of the Building Better Regions Fund closes for applications on 15 November 2018, and with $45 million earmarked for tourism-related ventures, I encourage Norfolk Island organisations to consider submitting an application. This funding opportunity has the potential to drive economic development, create local jobs and grow stronger partnerships across the community. I encourage interested applicants to speak with the Administrator about their application.

As always, I encourage you to contact the Administrator’s office should you have any questions or concerns, or a particular matter on which you would like an update.

Lastly, I am very pleased to be able to visit Norfolk Island next month. During this time I would like to meet as many people as I am able to. I will make time to meet with individual residents. Please contact Eric Hutchinson, the Administrator, if you would like to meet with me.

2018 Norfolk Island Fly-In

Thursday, October 25, 2018

There’s been a buzz quite literally in the air this week with the sights and sounds of model aeroplanes being flown around the island by our local and 33 visiting model aero flyers from Tingalpa, Rockhampton and RANS Model Aero Clubs – also a flyer from Thailand! Here for the 2018 ‘Norfolk Island Fly In, Allen Danvers Challenge’ they’ve had a brilliant week of flying all around the Island.

Participating flyers brought over a range of electric planes and gliders for flying this week, all especially freighted over. There have not only been planes both big and small but also a para motor glider (complete with parachute); a quad copter with a 4 motors controller that can flip, roll – and get up to speeds of 160kmph! We can’t wait to see some of the imagery from a DJI Mavc quad with inbuilt camera that has taken footage over Kingston and the Island during the week.

Over the past six years the success of this annual event means it has become the highlight of the year for many flyers and each year more and more flyers participate. One of the reasons it works so well is that Norfolk Island is a pretty unique model-aero flying destination due to the variety of places to fly from according to conditions and that are all only 5 - 10 minutes away. Flying locations this week included early mornings at Kingston, each afternoon at Cemetery Bay, Ball Bay and on private properties. The guys would like to especially thank David and Margaret Buffett and Mat and Natalie Christian for use of their land.

As hosts for the week the local Norfolk Island Model Aero Club organised not only a great week of flying but also socialising with plenty of time to catch up with friends. From Helen and everyone at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre we wish the Tingalpa Model Aero Club and other Club members a good trip home today. We certainly hope to see you all back next year for another fabulous Norfolk Island Fly In, Allan Danvers Challenge.

Norfolk Island Garden Week

Friday, October 12, 2018

Forty three visitors travelled to the Island this week to participate in Norfolk Island Garden Week activities. Included in the group were both CWA and U3A members, combining with avid gardeners and those simply interested in our wonderful natural environment. Timed to coincide with the Royal A & H Show, participants have joined a number of tours as well as independently joining many others.

Following a Welcome Dinner at Castaway Restaurant, everyone started their week with a half day island tour providing an overall orientation to the Island. Other tours during the week included a Guided Tour of the Botanical Gardens including green parrot talk and a private Bush Walk with Arthur Evans followed by morning tea at Captain Cook lookout.  The Hilli Goat tour – the Norfolk Whey was no doubt informative as well as delicious. Visiting a local Norfolk Island Garden Club member’s garden would have proved a highlight with the chance to see a local garden and talk with the owners. Attending the A & H Show also provided the opportunity to view our local produce, flowers, cooking, crafts and much more.

One participant commented on how thankful they felt towards all the locals they encounter running tours and opening up their gardens during this week, they have been welcomed wholeheartedly and had such a great time.

After finishing the week at a Farewell Dinner at The Olive Branch at the Golf Club, Teresa and all at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre sincerely hope that everyone has enjoyed their week. We’d love to welcome you back to the Island one day soon.

Belinda Biggs Norfolk Island Painting Holiday

Friday, October 12, 2018

This week the Norfolk Island Travel Centre has again welcomed Belinda Biggs and an enthusiastic group of artists to the island for her 8th ‘Belinda Biggs Norfolk Island Painting Holiday’. Inspired by the Island’s natural beauty Belinda has again shared her love of Norfolk with her students who have enjoyed painting at various sites around the Island.

This year Belinda’s group consisted of 10 painters and also some non-painters.  They’ve had a busy week of painting, dining, and touring and also enjoying Monday’s Royal A&H Show. In between painting workshops the group managed to also enjoy some sightseeing, local shopping and general relaxation.

Teresa and Rebecca and all at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre were so thrilled that Belinda returned this year to lead another of her popular Norfolk Island Painting Holidays. We wish her and the group all the best in their future artistic endeavours and look forward to welcoming Belinda back with another keen group of painters one day soon.

Southern Lightscapes Photography Tour with Ian Rolfe

Friday, September 07, 2018

How wonderful to welcome back Ian Rolfe to Norfolk Island leading another Southern Lightscapes Photography Tour. Ian was recently awarded as a Grand Master of the Australian Photography Society (APS), is an AIPP Accredited Professional Photographer and author of ‘Norfolk Island Ian Rolfe Photography’. And with this being his 16th trip to the Island, he is not only a wonderful friend to the Island but also knows so many places to follow the sun and stars around the island. His passion for Norfolk Island is summed up with his comment “I love Norfolk Island and it’s assuredly my favourite South Pacific destination”.

On this trip twelve lucky photographers from newcomers to more experienced, are spending 10 days immersed in their passion and enthusiasm for photography. Under Ian’s tuition they have been capturing dawn and first morning light, afternoon shadows, dusky evenings – and then our beautiful night skies. Exposure compensation, back lighting and time –lapse photography have been key focus areas of Ian’s tuition. Each evening he has critiqued photos taken that day and taught Photoshop enhancement techniques. Of course the group have also had down time from taking photos when they’ve enjoyed a number of tours and dinners around the Island.

Last year during Ian’s 2017 trip he presented Rebecca with a special set of unique metallic finish prints of Norfolk Island scenes for the Norfolk Island Travel Centre office. These stunning prints, framed locally in lovely Norfolk Pine by Tim Pearson, are now hung throughout the office and are an incredible showcase of his work and our island’s beauty. If you are passing our office, make sure to call in and see them.

Ian and his group have another few days left to still photograph the Island and enjoy their holiday. We hope that the weather remains as beautiful as this week and you are all inspired by the amazing beauty of our island.

You may also catch Ian during a radio interview on Radio 2NI this coming week. Rebecca, Karen and all at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre wish Ian and his group a safe trip home later this week.

A Special First Fleet Family Reunion Event in 2019

Friday, August 17, 2018

In March 2019 Norfolk Island’s First Fleet Anniversary celebrations present as the perfect opportunity for a family reunion and chance to meet fellow descendants of your First Fleeter ancestor. For the many Nathaniel Lucas and Olivia Gascoigne descendants who gathered for this year’s event, the week provided an opportunity to meet new family members, learn more about family connections, exchange contacts - and holiday together. Lucas descendants who visit in 2019 will once again experience this wonderful exchange.

Already other First Fleet families are organising reunions to coincide with the 6 March 2019 anniversary including descendants of Andrew Goodwin and Lydia Munroe, with family members likely to travel from every State except the Northern Territory. As a convict Lydia was transported for theft with co-accused Ann Forbes – and Andrew alongside William Butler after they were caught stealing a load of lead. What a wonderful meeting it would be if Andrew and Lydia’s descendants met up on Norfolk Island with Ann Forbes and William Butler’s descendants!

Finding the opportunity to exchange stories with fellow descendants is an important part of our First Fleet celebrations. A special mediated Your Family Forum session offers just this, with dedicated time to tell your family story and hear from others. It’s highly likely the session will end up revealing family commonalities and differences; intriguing details about life on the Island; and ‘who knew who’ as a fellow convict, land owner, free settler, marine or soldier.

If you are interested in this earliest period of British settlement on Norfolk Island then this is the week for you to travel. It is the only time dedicated experiences and tours are organised within a one week program delving in detail into life on the Island between 1788 and 1814 (when the Settlement closed).

Contact Maria Massey at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre for details of both their 2019 First Fleet and Holiday Packages, as well as accommodation discounts available when groups of 10+ travel together (perfect for a family reunion!).  Email Maria at maria@travelcentre.nf or call 1800 1400 66.

Time lock in your 2019 3D Archery Holiday

Friday, August 10, 2018

Norfolk Island Travel Centre are very pleased to advise that Holiday Packages to bring archers and their fellow Club members to the 2019 Norfolk Island Travel Centre Archery Championships are now in place.

This week presents as a wonderful winter’s holiday. Norfolk is an incredibly safe, easy and friendly destination – and you really will receive the warmest welcome from Archery Norfolk Island members. Members who represented Norfolk at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games have many stories to tell including competing against England and ranking around the middle of the field – not bad for a small South Pacific Island Club!

And the good news from the Club is that they’re extending their facilities from a 12 to 24 target FITA field. Match this with the variety of terrain available on their course and the Club really can boast having exceptional facilities.

Family or Club groups of 10+ can be eligible for accommodation benefits including one person staying for free! Please contact Helen Reeves on 1800 1400 66 or by email helen@travelcentre.nf for conditions as well as a detailed Information Pack with accommodation and flight options.

Time to plan for December’s Pistol Shooting Champs

Friday, July 06, 2018

As a recreational pistol shooter, if you subscribe to Pistol Shooting Queensland, Australian Shooter’s newletters or Focus Magazine you’ll be seeing some of Norfolk Island Travel Centre’s promotions for this December’s Norfolk Island Pistol Shooting Championships. It’s certainly gearing up to be a fantastic competition this year and we hope that you might also help to spread the word as well as join us on-Island for the competition.

The local Norfolk Island Pistol Shooting Club were recently thrilled that The Polynesian Apartments Norfolk Island have come on board as new sponsors. They are offering great group savings with one room for free when a group of ten plus book and stay together (groups can be made up of both shooters and non-shooters). Please ask Christan Davies about package prices for staying at the Polynesian to take advantage of this great offer – perhaps a group from your Club would like to stay together?

As Norfolk Island Travel Centre can secure group airline bookings our Holiday Packages include very competitive prices to bring competitors combined return airfares, accommodation and car hire in one neat bundle.

This year is going to be a fantastic year to compete on Norfolk Island – and we’d be honoured to bring you here for the competition. Don’t delay in calling Christan Davies on 1800 1400 66 or by email christan@travelcentre.nf.

‘Belinda Biggs Norfolk Island Painting Holiday’.

Friday, April 06, 2018

Inspired by Norfolk’s natural beauty Belinda Biggs is once again set to share her love of the Island when she tutors artists during her 5 – 12 October 2018 Belinda Biggs Norfolk Island Painting Holiday.

Her works are treasured in private and public collections worldwide.

However for all this fame when joining Belinda on her trip, students will also realise that she is a generous and attentive teacher taking care to ensure that everyone from newer to more experienced artists are all individually supported on their artistic journey. Belinda’s love and good knowledge of Norfolk Island is a major asset to this week as she personally selects and introduces each painting location.

As an artist, there could be no better trip to choose to experience an incredible Norfolk Island art retreat and holiday. Belinda has selected a number of tours and meals that are also included in the package price together with daily painting tuition sessions. 230th Anniversary First Fleet Celebrations

Friday, March 09, 2018

The Norfolk Island Travel Centre was delighted to welcome 83 people travelling to the Island this week to participate in First Fleet Celebrations centring on the re-enactment on Foundation Day. With many in the group descended from First and Second Fleeters who also lived on Norfolk Island, the week presented a moving opportunity to stand on the very land where their ancestors lived and worked.

Over 60 of the group participated in a special program of activities to explore their ancestor’s time on the Island. This included a special Customised First Settlement Tour and Family History Research presentation by the Norfolk Island Museum offering the opportunity to be immersed in the island’s history from 1788 to 1814. For those whose ancestors arrived here on the last voyage of the Sirius before wrecking here in 1790, the visit to the Sirius Museum must have been especially poignant.

Sharing of their ancestor stories and connections occurred during an ‘In their Footsteps: Nathaniel and Olivia Lucas’ guided tour, followed by visiting the places of importance to Nathaniel and Olivia and other of the First Fleeter and Settler descendants.   Foundation Day itself offered the chance to be immersed in the arrival of the first group of 23 to Norfolk Island in 1788 and then be happily entertained over a sumptuous lunch with Pinetrees Tours. An exclusive Farewell Luncheon at Forrester’s Court provided not only a stunning backdrop and food, but the First Settlement story of First Fleeter Robert Forrester. In between, many in the group joined a number of tours, activities and dinners throughout the week.

From Maria and the Norfolk Island Travel Centre Team we hope that your week on the Island where your ancestors lived has been a very special and happy one. We wish you a safe return home and look forward to welcoming you back to Norfolk Island one day soon.

Solo Connections Norfolk Island Trip

Friday, March 09, 2018

Norfolk Island Travel Centre were delighted to welcome this week Solo Connections’ Bek Ortega escorting ten travellers for a week of holidaying and fun on Norfolk Island. As a single traveller it can often be daunting to undertake travelling alone, which is where travel company Solo Connections fits right in! As Bek spent most of her childhood living on Norfolk she is passionate about promoting the Island through the business and offers a real ‘insiders’ perspective to her group.

Bek organised the week’s program to take in her best pick of the Island’s dining and tours. Starting their first night off with dinner at Dino’s followed by the Sound & Light Show set the pace for the week.  Staying at and well looked after by Sue at Aloha Apartments, they have ventured out each day to enjoy tours including: Half Day Island tour, Convict Settlement Tour, the Cyclorama and Queen Victoria Gardens followed by lunch at Hilli’s, Breakfast Bushwalk, Xtian Brothers Cheers tour, Island Adventures 4WD, Colleen McCullough Home Tour and Hilli Goat Tour. Added to all that was attending Tuesday’s Foundation Day re-enactment followed by lunch with Pinetrees.

To revive themselves from each day’s activity and also add in some extra evening entertainment, the group loved the Island Culture Evening BBQ, dinner at Castaway followed by Wonderland at Night, dinner at the Bowlo, a Progressive Dinner, Island Fish Fry and Night as a Convict.

At the end of such a great week seeing the Island under Bek’s knowledgeable care, the team at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre wish all the Solo Connections travellers a safe trip home. We hope the memories of this holiday will stay with you a long time.

Friday, March 09, 2018

Travel Team in conjunction with Norfolk Island Travel Centre warmly welcomed a group of 21 visitors for a week’s holiday on Norfolk Island, timed to include the Island’s Foundation Day celebrations. Travelling from Brisbane and staying at the Paradise Hotel, the group has been personally escorted by Judith Fraser from Travel Team.

Everyone has had a busy week exploring the Island and joining many tours and activities. On their first full day and after a leisurely wander around the Sunday Markets, the half-day Island tour provided a great overview and orientation to the island and tours to come. These included the Behind the Hedges Tour, Island Culture Tour, Convict Settlement Tour, Culla & Co Carriage ride and Pitcairn Settlers Village. Evening meals have included Fletcher’s Fate, Progressive Dinner, Island Fish Fry and meals at Paradise Hotel. Of course attending the Foundation Day re-enactment followed by a delicious lunch added an extra historical and scenic feature to the week.

On behalf of Norfolk Island Travel Centre we hope Judith and all on the Travel Team tour have had a wonderful Norfolk Island holiday.  We look forward to welcoming you back again one day soon.

A New Golf Tournament for Norfolk Island

Friday, March 09, 2018

The Norfolk Island Golf Club’s inaugural playing of the Stolley Shield Golf Tournament occurs this year from 10 to 13 December 2018. In the tradition of the Ryder & Presidents Cup, you’ll sign up to join ‘The Rest of the World Team’ to pitch yourselves against the local Norfolk Islanders with handicap match play used to determine the winning team.

However if you already understand the meaning behind the name of this Tournament, you’ll have a clue to the mood for this event. With ‘stolley’ meaning talking rubbish or telling a few porky pies, you’ll be sure to experience plenty of  friendly banter, team rivalry and the golf equivalent of the ‘size of the one that got away’!

However to participate you’ll need to move quickly as visiting entries are strictly capped at the first 20 received. There are some very special functions with this event including a Dinner in the Ruins in The Crank Mill in Kingston and a fabulous Presentation Dinner Fish Fry.

To bring you to the competition the Norfolk Island Travel Centre has a choice of suggested travel packages including return flights ex Sydney or Brisbane, 7 nights twin share accommodation, 7 days car hire and Stolley Shield tournament entry. Four day packages can also be organised. Contact Karen Buffett by email at karen@travelcentre.nf or call 1800 1400 66.

Quilters Getaway 2018

Friday, January 05, 2018

We are so pleased to bring you details of the 2018 Norfolk Island Quilters Getaway to be held 29 October to 2 November 2018. With many quilting events on offer across Australia, Quilt Norfolk’s Getaway really stands out.

Previous attendee S.H. from Queensland commented that the week “far exceeded my expectations” and W.H. from Victoria reflected, “Your organisation of the whole time was A1, everything worked, timetables were adhered to and the venues were tops”. In 2018 Tutors Amanda Daly, Caroline Sharkey and Andrea Taylor will teach a diverse range of techniques, patterns and styles as described on the flyer following this message.

Amanda Daly’s work could best be described as contemporary with a particular love for appliqué and quilting. She also enjoys making quilts that are a twist on the traditional as well as pushing the boundaries with new and different materials.

Caroline Sharkey is driven by colour and strives to find that special combination with a WOW! factor. She teaches her techniques of fabric embellishments and textured surface always loving the journey that she is on to inspire and encourage everyone to experience the creative side of Textile Art.

Andrea Taylor was drawn to the simplicity, boldness and geometry of Japanese Sashiko designs and finds teaching the method a rewarding one. She finds using the traditional “chaco” drafting pattern transfer method gives her freedom of expression in her designs. Andrea’s classes are bound to be filled with insights into this genre in a relaxed and peaceful environment.

As interest has already been strong and bookings made, the week is shaping up to be a brilliant quilting holiday. Please contact Kelly Schmitz for a full Information Pack at kelly@travelcentre.nf or on freecall 1800 1400 66.

Fun Over 50’s Norfolk Island Holiday

Thursday, December 28, 2017

It was wonderful to welcome back Anne Richards to the Island last Saturday, escorting a group of twenty Fun Over 50s travellers for a fabulous Christmas week on Norfolk Island. Based from their accommodation at South Pacific Hotel they have spent the week touring and relaxing and hopefully loving their special Christmas Day lunch at the Hotel.

Before Christmas Day they were able to gain an orientation to the Island on a Half Day Tour, followed by a visit to Fletcher’s Mutiny Cyclorama. Perhaps feeling like they were ‘se moosa bust’ (so full to busting!) after Christmas Day lunch and dinner, hopefully Culla & Co’s Horse carriage ride eased them into the day before joining a Convict Settlement Tour and a Progressive Dinner that night. The weather was perfect for a Glass Bottom Boat ride on Thursday, followed by an Island Culture Tour. Yesterday the group enjoyed the Island Adventures 4WD before finishing their Christmas Week with all the fun at Night As a Convict.

From Maria and the team at Norfolk Island Travel Centre it has been our pleasure to be travel partners with Fun Over 50’s bringing Anne and her group to Norfolk Island for Christmas this year. We hope you have all had a memorable festive time and hope to see you back again one day soon.

Christmas on Norfolk Island for Seniors Holiday Travel Team

Thursday, December 28, 2017

Seniors Holiday Travel Team has run another “Christmas on Norfolk Island” holiday this year, with seventeen enthusiastic travellers now coming to the end of a wonderful Christmas week. Offered in conjunction with Norfolk Island Travel Centre, the group leader for this trip was Carol Holt returning again to lead the tour.

Some of the tours to start the week off were Half Day Island Tour, followed by the Greenfinger Tour to explore the birds and nature of the Island. Dinner at Hilli’s hopefully didn’t fill everyone up too much as both Christmas lunch and Christmas dinner were relished the next day at Paradise Hotel. The best way to recover from any excesses on Boxing Day was to join the Behind the Hedges Tour to enjoy a number of private gardens, followed by the Convict Settlement Tour, a BBQ dinner and then Wonderland by Night. Other tours and evening events have included Island Culture Tour, Fletcher’s Fate Mystery Dinner, Culla & Co, Island Fish Fry, Mutiny on the Bounty Show and Pitcairn Settlers Village.

As Carol and her group depart the Island today, Maria & all at Norfolk Island Travel Centre wish everyone a Happy New Year and certainly hope a very special 2017 Christmas holiday has been had by all.

Take a Norfolk Island Trip That Matters

Thursday, December 07, 2017

So many of us come home from a holiday with a deep desire to just go back!

Not many of us however are so inspired that we return within months, but this is exactly what Di, a recent volunteer on a Norfolk Island Wild mob trip has done. Di’s ‘holiday’ also challenges our conventional view of what we should do with precious vacation time as you discover she was volunteering her time to weed invasive species on Reserves and private properties around the Island, undertake bird counts and other bush restoration activities as a member of a Wild mob trip.

‘Get wild. Do things that matter’ is the tag lines of Wild mob, a not-for-profit, non-political organisation who takes volunteers on adventures to save endangered species and restore their habitats.  Their Norfolk Island Project focuses on bush-land restoration to improve habitat for over 55 threatened or endangered species and up to 18 species of seabirds that breed within Norfolk, Phillip and Nepean Islands.

While most holiday-goers to Norfolk Island don’t spend their time weeding, they also won’t have the opportunity to go onto private properties or engage so much with locals and our environment. Another member of Di’s group was thrilled with the interactive and social aspects of the week – particularly in comparison to other conservation projects she has worked on. To see what it’s all about check out this Youtube clip: http://youtu.be/I6r8XjqQ6To

Joining a Wild mob Conservation trip really proves the saying ‘the more you give the more you get’. There are trips in April and July in 2018. Contact Joyce at Norfolk Island Travel Centre for details and

230th Foundation Day Anniversary Celebrations

Thursday, December 07, 2017

The 2018 First Fleet Anniversary Celebrations on Norfolk Island are shaping up to be very special.

Marking the 230th anniversary of the 1788 landing of Lieutenant Philip Gidley King and 22 others to start the Norfolk Island Settlement, this week offers the opportunity to honour and reflect on not only their lives but all who subsequently came to the Island over the ensuing 25 years until the Settlements closure in 1814.

The Norfolk Island Travel Centre has prepared what we hope to be a special Optional First Fleet Package for the week. It includes attending the 6 March Foundation Day re-enactment of the landing followed by a sumptuous luncheon by the water; a First Settlement tour by the Norfolk Island Museum; a ‘Focus on Family’ tour visiting the places Nathaniel and Olivia Lucas called home and work that intertwines with other descendant families and common life features of the time (as well as information on haemochromatosis, the hereditary condition Nathanial and Olivia passed on to many of their descendants); a research session at the KAVHA Research Centre; and finally an exclusive cliff-top celebratory luncheon.

Many Lucas family descendants have already booked for this trip which is fast becoming a fabulous and unique Lucas family get together.

We would love you to be on Norfolk Island for this special 230th anniversary event. Please contact me for Holiday Package and Optional First Fleet Package details, at maria@travelcentre.nf or on 1800 1400 66.

Theatre in Paradise in 2018

Sunday, November 19, 2017

Next year marks the 21st Anniversary of the Norfolk Island Theatre Festival and there are many reasons to celebrate this significant anniversary and achievement by Norfolk Amateur Theatrical Society who annually present the Festival. In 2018 it runs from 30 September to 5 October.

The Norfolk Island Theatre Festival is not only excellent for actors, but theatre lovers in general. During this week you’ll enjoy a week of competition performances of one-act plays or an excerpt from a full length play of not more than 20 minutes duration.  Entries are judged by a visiting Adjudicator who offers constructive feedback on each performance to actors and directors alike.  For the actors there are also workshops and of course for everyone, plenty of sightseeing and socialising to enjoy!

Brisbane local Julie Bray must surely have set the record for appearances at the Theatre Festival as for the past 17 years she has travelled to Norfolk Island with Front Row Theatre (originally API Theatre) to perform. We certainly hope she will be back for the 21st anniversary event in 2018 as Julie says “I love coming to the Festival because it is such a complete experience... it is a real highlight of my year”.

World Photo Adventures

Friday, November 10, 2017

Some of you would remember Darran Leal as he was the Islands photographer (for Tim Wood Pine Studio’s) in 1980. He met his wife Julia at Puppies Point with a photo group that he brought from Brisbane in 1989 and was married on the island in 1991 with Boo and Agnes as witnesses. Since then, Darran and Julia have brought several groups of photographers to explore the place they know as paradise and this week returned to lead another tour.

Darren says: “I had another fantastic group this week who explored many of the places that most visitors miss. The walk along the base at Cascades again offered beautiful nesting Red-tailed Tropic Birds. 100 Acres is a special place on the island for nature lovers. A highlight was finding a nesting fan-tail feeding its chicks. We even added some ghostly fun with long exposures at night and a convict model (Darran) - a lot of fun and laughs”.

The group came from several locations in Australia and one Kiwi. What did they enjoy shooting the most?  “First of all they loved the people and the food. The Fish Fry was the best, with diets forgotten for 24 hours! The seascapes where a highlight with everyone shooting a mix of water and iconic trees. Then the general nature shots, but without doubt the birds won out. From boobies to little terns with fish, hours were spent trying to get that unique moment in time. The group’s favourite bird was a young little tern at 100 Acres”.

From Tara and all at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre it was wonderful to welcome (back) Darran and Julia and their group of photographers. No doubt Darran and Julia will bring back another group in future – we certainly hope so!

Travelling from both Sydney and Brisbane and staying at the Paradise Hotel, the group has been personally escorted around the island by Peter Francis from Seniors Holiday Travel Team.

They have had a busy week exploring the Island and joining many tours and activities. The half-day Island tour at the beginning of the week provided an overview of the island which was then explored in more detail during the Behind the Hedges Tour, Xtian Brothers Cheese Tour, Island Culture Tour, Convict Settlement Tour and Pitcairn Settlers Village. Evening meals have included Fletcher’s Fate, Progressive Dinner, Island Fish Fry and a BBQ dinner at Paradise Hotel.

On behalf of Norfolk Island Travel Centre we hope Peter and all on the Seniors Travel Team tour have had a wonderful Norfolk Island holiday.  We look forward to welcoming you back again one day soon.

Scenic Reunion Norfolk Island Holiday

Friday, October 20, 2017

The story of this group of twenty friends travelling together began in Canada 11 years ago when they all met on a Scenic Holiday tour. Their time together was so enjoyable that they have been meeting up to travel together every 18 months since and for 2017 they decided on a Norfolk Island holiday.  Staying at Aloha Apartments the group have enjoyed a week of sightseeing and touring, as well as enjoying plenty of catch-up time over meals and evening entertainment.

The tours they have joined together include Sound and Light Show, Half Day Island Tour, Convict Settlement, Island Culture Tour and Wonderland by Night. In the evenings they’ve dinned together at The Jolly Roger and on an Island Fish Fry. They are looking forward to their farewell night on Sunday where they will visit island homes for a Progressive Dinner.

Jannise and the Norfolk Island Travel Centre team hope that group leader Kathy Biggs and all the Scenic Reunion group have thoroughly enjoyed their Norfolk Island get-together, sharing time and friendship together on our beautiful Island.

Good News For New Zealanders’s Travelling To The 2018 Norfolk Island Country Music Festival

Sunday, October 01, 2017

Good news from the Norfolk Island Travel Centre came recently with the announcement that they are chartering an Air New Zealand service to bring both performing Kiwi country music artists and holidaying fans to next May’s Norfolk Island Country Music Festival. This comes as welcome relief following the recent announcement by Norfolk Island Airlines that direct flights between New Zealand and Norfolk Island will cease after 14 January, potentially disrupting travel plans for those already booked to attend the Festival.

The Norfolk Island Country Music Festival is among the biggest and most loved events on the Island’s annual calendar. As the 2018 Festival marks the 25th anniversary the local Norfolk Island Country Music Association (NICMA) is presenting a week big on performances and celebrations.  New Zealand performers and audience members have played a large part in the sustained success of this Festival over the past 25 years and this is now set to continue in 2018.

Headline NZ performers include Dennis Marsh and The Topp Twins. Dennis Marsh has performed and attended so many previous Festivals that it was inconceivable for NICMA to imagine the 25th celebration without him. The return of The Topp Twins has been applauded by local Islanders who so enjoyed the music, unique humour and style of those boot stompin’ Gingham Sisters in their last Festival performance.  Travis Collins, Fanny Lumsden and Mason Hope are among the line-up of Australian performers. And as the size and nature of Norfolk is small and easy, fans will find that they’ll be rubbing shoulders with headlining performers, perhaps bumping into them at a café or in the local supermarket.

Travelling to attend this Festival delivers so much more than a usual festival experience. On Norfolk Island visitors find excellent music and a great ‘festival feel’ combined with a brilliant holiday destination. On top of the music many enjoy coral reef snorkelling; World Heritage listed Kingston; exploring the unique local Norf’k culture; or a game of golf or bowls or a rainforest walks.

Holiday Packages to attend the 2018 Norfolk Island Country Music Festival from 19 – 26 May start from AU$1289pp (NZ$1547)twin share ex Auckland including return airfares and taxes, NI airport transfers, 7 night’s twin share accommodation, 7 days car hire, half day Island tour and more.

St. George High School Wildmob Conservation Trip

Saturday, September 30, 2017

It’s hard to imagine what appeal small, isolated and largely untouched Norfolk Island could have for city teenagers accustomed to a plethora of entertainment options and non-stop stimulation. Well, according to Maja, one of a group of twelve visiting St. George Girls High School students, one of the stand out reasons is that Norfolk is a “really peaceful place, it’s calming and so different to Sydney.” Maja and classmates Kimberley and Rouya, have really enjoyed not only discovering the many contrasts between Norfolk and Sydney but also undertaking beach clean-ups and weeding work as part of the week’s conservation outcomes.

Traveling on a Wildmob Conservation trip offers these students an opportunity to really understand our own and collective impact on the environment. The pervasiveness of plastic rubbish really hit the girls this week with their eyes newly opened to how it has made its way even onto what would appear to be our pristine beaches: “Once you look you can see it everywhere.” They each expressed a desire to try and cut down on use of plastics, be more aware of overly packaged goods and closely watch what they were consuming.

An appreciation for life on our small Island with a close-knit community, shared heritage and “the way you treat each other” also struck the girls. They have seen and heard how residents live together and have a unique shared identity and sense of belonging, so much so that Kimberley remarked that this week “makes me want to go home and celebrate my heritage.”

The students have been escorted this week by St. George Girls High School teachers Dianne Duffy and Tina Whitehead and Wildmob’s CEO Derek Ball. This is the 2nd trip for Diana who is enthusiastic about the opportunities a week of conservation work brings to the girls and also the opportunity it offers for them to take a rest and break from the non-stop nature of city life.

The outcome of this week certainly feels like a win-win, both for the girls and also our environment. On behalf of Joyce, Rebecca and the Norfolk Island Travel Centre team we wish you all a safe journey back home to Sydney. We hope the special lessons learned, and calm from the relaxed time you’ve had on our Island stay with you a long time.

Norfolk Island Social Ballroom Dancing Week 2018

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

It’s been 3 months since we farewelled everyone from June’s Social Ballroom Dancing Week. If you were lucky enough to be a participant, we hope that the memories are still fresh bringing a smile to your face and a tap in your toes!

The Norfolk Island Travel Centre is now very pleased to present details of the 2018 Social Ballroom Dancing Week and hope that dancers will join the Norfolk Island Social Ballroom Dancing Committee and dancing friends for this wonderful week. The dates for 2018 are 17-22 June and once again Tanya Kershaw and Jan Lawrence will be leading tutors.

Every year this event includes a fabulous themed night and in 2018 the theme is Jungle Safari – we can only imagine the wild creations that will appear at Rawson Hall next June. For those who may have enquired, but have never travelled for this week before, we would just like to say there is no need to hesitate you really will have a Ball! With limited spaces and heavy bookings however our best suggestion is to reserve your place as soon as you can.

Kings Tours visit Norfolk Island

Monday, September 18, 2017

It was wonderful to welcome Rod King of Kings of Newcastle Coach Tours & Travel escorting 27 Newcastle region based visitors on a Norfolk Island holiday. Kings Coaches have travelled to Norfolk Island many, many times over the years, initially escorted by Rod’s parents and founders of the business, Grahame and Helen and since their retirement by Rod and his wife Amanda.

Staying at Paradise Hotel & Resort the group are having had a busy week of touring and travelling around the Island. By the time Rod and his group depart on Monday they will certainly have seen the best Norfolk has to offer!

Starting their touring last Tuesday, an orientation to the Island was gained on a half day tour. Dinner that night at Castaway Hotel was followed by the drama of the Sound and Light Show. Visiting the 4 Norfolk Island Museums during Tag-A-Long tours across two mornings has been complimented with an Interesting Places Tour and relaxing Culla & Co Horse and Carriage Tour. Today they group will enjoy a Breakfast Bushwalk and Island Culture Tour and on Sunday the wonderful Cyclorama. During the evenings many delicious meals have been consumed including an Island Cuisine Tasting Table Dinner, Island Fish Fry and Night as a Convict Dinner. After dinner at the RSL tonight, we’re sure Wonderland by Night will be a treat, as will tomorrow nights’ final meal at a Clifftop Dinner at Bedrock.

On behalf of Jannise, Rebecca and all the team at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre we say thank you to Rod and his group for visiting our island and travelling in conjunction with us. We wish you a safe trip home on Monday and hope to see you back on-Island again one day soon.

Take a Norfolk Island Trip That Matters

Friday, September 15, 2017

So many of us come home from a holiday with a deep desire to just go back!

Not many of us however are so inspired that we return within months, but this is exactly what Di, a recent volunteer on a Norfolk Island Wildmob trip has done. Di’s ‘holiday’ also challenges our conventional view of what we should do with precious vacation time as you discover she was volunteering her time to weed invasive species on Reserves and private properties around the Island, undertake bird counts and other bush restoration activities as a member of a Wildmob trip.

‘Get wild. Do things that matter’ is the tag lines of Wildmob, a not-for-profit, non-political organisation who takes volunteers on adventures to save endangered species and restore their habitats.

Joining a Wildmob Conservation trip really proves the saying ‘the more you give the more you get’. There is one more trip scheduled for early October this year (limited spaces still available) and a trip in April and July in 2018. Contact Joyce at Norfolk Island Travel Centre for details and enquiries at joyce@travelcentre.nf or see https://www.norfolkislandtravelcentre.com/?s=Wildmob

Spring Ukulele Festival

Friday, September 15, 2017

The Norfolk Island Travel Centre was thrilled this week to welcome 60 visiting ukulele players travelling to Norfolk to participate in the Spring Norfolk Island Ukulele Festival. Their hosts the Norfolk Island Uke Band led by Don Reynolds have presented a week of playing, learning and performing mixed together with terrific meals, socialising and activities.

We hope that playing uke’s at places such as the Sunday markets, beside the sparkling waters at Emily Bay, at Kingston’s Old Government House site, during the Yuukalieli Showcase at Rawson Hall, at the farewell night dressed in Rock & Roll fancy dress and during workshops at Tampali have been not only entertaining but inspiring.

Southern Lightscapes tour with Ian Rolfe

Friday, September 15, 2017

It’s no wonder that Ian Rolfe’s 2017 Norfolk Island tour was sold out months ago. Ian, a Master of Photography, professional photographer, multi-award winner and author of ‘Norfolk Island Ian Rolfe Photography’ – is also a fabulous photography teacher. Add this to the fact that this is his 15th trip to the Island, so he really knows the Island’s best spots to follow the sun and stars around the island. His passion for Norfolk Island is summed up with his comment “I love Norfolk Island and it’s assuredly my favourite South Pacific destination”.

The sixteen lucky photographers on this trip are spending 12 days indulging their passion and enthusiasm for photography. Together they have been capturing first morning light, afternoon shadows and dusky evenings against a back drop of Kingston’s historic buildings, craggy cliff-tops, lush green valleys, majestic pine trees and sparkling waters. At night they have braved the cemetery to take time-lapse photos of the evening sky, then risen early the next morning to capture the changing dawn light from Queen Elizabeth lookout. Time –lapse photography is a passion of Ian’s and judging by the stunning footage he showed Norfolk Island Travel Centre staff, his students must be filled with awe and enthusiasm for the technique.

As if all this is not enough, each evening Ian has critiqued photos taken that day and taught enhancement techniques in Photoshop sessions. Of course the group have had some down time from taking photos when they’ve enjoyed a number of tours and dinners around the Island.

Ian had a special surprise for Rebecca Christan and the Norfolk Island Travel Centre this year. While NITC’s new premises already have Ian’s photos on the walls, he presented Rebecca with a special set of unique metallic finish prints of Norfolk Island scenes. These stunning prints will be proudly framed and hung throughout the office and will no doubt become an amazing showcase of the Island’s beauty for all our office visitors. An extraordinarily generous and beautiful gift indeed.

Ian and his group have another week left to still photograph the Island and enjoy their holiday. We hope that the weather remains as beautiful as this week and you are all inspired by the amazing beauty of our island.

Copies of Ian’s book ‘Norfolk Island Ian Rolfe Photography’ are still available at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre office opposite the RSL and sell for $59. They are a beautiful coffee table book and an excellent present for friends and family both on and off-Island. We have a limited number of personally signed copies by Ian, please call in to view a copy.

Green Travel Concepts visit Norfolk Island

Friday, September 15, 2017

It was wonderful to welcome this week Vanessa from Green Travel Concepts escorting 8 South Australian travellers on a tour of Norfolk Island. Designed as a small group tour, Green Travel Concepts organised an itinerary to capture a varied week of experiences, tours and meals.

Staying at Paradise Hotel the group have ventured out each day to so far enjoy Fletcher’s Mutiny Cyclorama, Norfolk Today tour, Pitcairn Settlers Village, Behind the Hedges tour and Colleen McCullough Home tour. Today and tomorrow we know they’ll also love joining the Island Culture tour and Convict Settlement tour; and during the evenings the Sound and Light tour and Murder Mystery Dinner. Other evening entertainment has included an Island Fish Fry, Hilli Restaurant, Mutiny on the Bounty Show and Pizza Dinner at Castaway.

We hope that when Vanessa and her group depart on Monday to begin their journey home, after having seen and experienced so much of our island, that they feel like they’ve really had a very special Green Travel Concepts Norfolk Island holiday. On behalf of Jannise and all the team at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre we wish you a safe trip home and hope to welcome you back one day soon.
