a REPORT INTO WHY NORFOLK ISLAND'S MAJOR PROBLEM IS DIRDC

"Norfolk Island's Major Problem is DIRDC"

From 1979 until 2015 Norfolk Island enjoyed a degree of self-government, but this was terminated in June 2015 by the then Australian Government which abolished the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly, disbanded the Norfolk Island Government and public service and absorbed Norfolk Island into the Australian taxation and welfare systems.

Responsibility for this transition was placed upon the Commonwealth Minister for Territories, with analysis, advice, and management being provided by the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities (DIRDC).

The independent report "Norfolk Island's Major Problem is DIRDC" (attached) examines the relationship of DIRDC and Norfolk Island over the years 2015-2018, in economic, social, managerial and governance terms. The report claims that the outcome of DIRDC's intervention in relation to Norfolk Island has been calamitous. Means of ameliorating situation, including recommendations to the Minister of Territories, are indicated.
