Road Safety

NIPF were visited by a Norfolk Island school student this week having concerns of road safety involving students.  The concerns the student had were witnessed by themselves and other student, which included the following Traffic Act breaches:

  • Speeding;
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol;
  • Drug driving;
  • Texting, videoing and talking on the phone whilst driving;
  • Not wearing seatbelts;
  • Not displaying P plates;
  • Too many passengers in car for P platers; and
  • Reckless driving.

It is concerning to NIPF that children are committing these traffic offences at the beginning of their driving career.  Children learn behaviours from adults and road safety education starts at home.  Parents, please talk to your children about their driving behaviours as you are also responsible for their driving behaviour.  It goes without saying that if Learner drivers and Provisional drivers are caught by police committing the above traffic offences, they will be issued with a ticket and may be summonsed to court for the more serious offences that could result in loss of licence.

Older students are also concerned about younger children when it comes to road safety.  The following behaviours have been witnessed:

  • Swerving across roads on bicycles;
  • Not wearing helmets when riding bicycles;
  • Bicycles in an un-safe condition; and
  • Not following road rules when riding bicycles.

Once again, parents please talk to your children about road safety at a young age, especially when they start riding bicycles. Road Safety starts at home.
