Dear Norfolk Island Residents

I am very pleased to have been asked by the Prime Minister to fill the position of Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories. Together with you, your community, the Norfolk Island Regional Council and Administrator Eric Hutchinson, I look forward to continuing the work of my colleague the Hon Sussan Ley MP towards a strong future for Norfolk Island.

To give you some background; my family and I own a dairy farming business in Harvey, a small rural community in the South West region of Western Australia. I have worked with and for small communities, regional and agricultural organisations and groups for most of my life. Following my election as the Member for Forrest in 2007, I took on the role of Whip immediately on entering the Parliament and was appointed as the first female Chief Government Whip in 2015.

My role as Minister is to serve you, the community of Norfolk Island – and to be your voice in Canberra. I understand during the last few years there have been challenges. Despite this, I also understand there are many positives, and by working together there is more we can achieve.

Service delivery will be a key focus, including the forging of a long-term partnership for state-type services, and working with you to finalise the design of the new medical facility. Extending the Commonwealth Corporations laws will ensure Island businesses no longer operate under two sets of laws.

I understand Norfolk Island has a unique history and culture, which must be respected and maintained as we take steps to secure and grow the local economy. Working relationships based on trust and open communication are important to me, and I will work with key representatives in your community, including the Administrator, Council of Elders, the Mayor Robin Adams and Councillors.

It is my intention to visit Norfolk Island as soon as possible and to meet as many of you as I can. There is more to be done, and I look forward to hearing from you about what’s important to you and others on the Island.

The Hon Nola Marino MP

June 2019
