A big WELCOME to all who are here this week for the 29th Annual Veterans' Tennis Tournament proudly sponsored by Governor's Lodge Resort and also generously supported by local businesses and the community. Players from Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland and NSW will arrive over the weekend to join local players in contesting Ladies, Mens and Mixed Doubles events for 40's,50's,60's and 70's Age Divisions.  We could possibly accommodate a few late entries if any tennis player  is already on island  -especially ladies for the Mixed Dbls- please come up early on Sunday afternoon  and check out the options!

Huge thanks to all the Committee and club members, including many juniors, who have put in hours at working bees and in their own time to ensure that Clubhouse, courts  and surrounds are looking wonderful. And in anticipation, special thanks to those  who'll bring in delicious morning tea goodies to keep up the energy levels. Refreshments of Tea, Coffee and cool drinks  will be available throughout the week, and appreciation to the committee members who'll help keep things running smoothly.  You'll also be able to purchase tickets  in the Major Raffle to be drawn on Saturday evening - this is to help fund court resurfacing,  which is a particularly  expensive exercise here.

Sunday 21st April sees  the  program begin with a Registration and Social tennis afternoon from 2pm for all players, followed at about 6.30 pm by a formal Welcome and Fish fry where partners and supporters are also able to get into the swing of things.

Play gets under way on Monday morning from 8.30 am  with  the Combined 60's/ 70's  Ladies Doubles  and in the afternoon the 40's/50/s will be on court from 2 pm. Main event, Plate and Consolation matches will be played through to decide finalists for Friday.

Tuesday will follow a similar pattern for the  Mens Doubles - 8.30am  the 60's/70's Division and afternoon matches for the 40's/ 50's,

On Wednesday  the 60's/70's  Mixed Doubles-  the event with most entries-  commences at 8.30 am and Mixed  50's and 40's follow later on. In these events we plan to play through to determine semi-finalists for  play-offs on Friday, and some Plate and Consolation matches will likely be played on Thursday. Since that is ANZAC DAY we normally halt play at 11 am to acknowledge and honour those who ensured our freedom to enjoy the  lifestyle we have here on this beautiful island. We'll miss our usual NZ contingent particularly at that time, as current flight schedules made it too hard for many of our regulars to get here. Again, to all, warmest wishes from Ngaire O'Brien for a successful tournament.

On Thursday morning- ANZAC DAY - very early at 5.15am!-   all are  invited to join the community  at Emily Bay  for a very moving and memorable Dawn Service.  Staff at the Office of the Administrator's  have  also issued an  invitation to  tennis players to share in a Community Breakfast at Government House after the service. Any  Plate and Consolation matches not completed on Wednesday, or carried forward from Monday or Tuesday will be finished on Thursday.

On Friday FINALS  of the seven events will be played throughout the day and they  will be advised over the local radio. Spectators are very welcome to come and watch during the week and you will be amazed- and maybe amused- at the skill and guile that veteran tennis players are noted for!

Then on  Friday  evening from 7 pm the fabled TRI-NATIONS CHALLENGE for the Veterans' Games Shield  will be held. Teams from Australia and Norfolk will battle it out, and the Junior Fund raising Squad will be supplying delicious hot food to sustain everyone. The more the merrier, and  to add to the atmosphere wear the colours and fly the flags.

On Saturday  at a  Presentation Dinner at Governor's Lodge , prizes will be handed  out and short  formalities  will  conclude the week . Tickets at $55 pp are available from Sunday at Registration up until  Wednesday at the Clubhouse. Do come along and be part of one of the big weeks in the Cheryl Calendar.

Pacific East Games in Auckland

We welcomed back the Juniors, Sam Cribb, Croyden Snell, Hannah Wright, Brianna Tavener, Kyran Randall, Tony & Vinnie Martinovich, Alyssa Miller and Mali Garden, last Sunday.  From the few accounts that I have heard, all went well and the children played some great tennis.  There were certainly some happy faces!  Well done Yorlie on your great efforts.

Thanks again to Danny for accompanying the kids and for the training also Thankyou to Melissa who trained the older squad kids and also to Jo Snell for all the work she did behind the scenes, in the day to day organisation, shopping, cooking, washing, taxiing, etc…

A big thank you to Emma Wright for her efforts in the trip organisation.

Sam would like to thank Smudgie and Head for the 2nd Racquet he played with in Auckland.

We look forward to hearing a full report in the near future.  However I do know that Hannah Wright is to be congratulated on finishing third overall in her age group and as a result will be heading off again in the near future to represent Norfolk Island in the next level of play in Fiji.  I also believe that the Norfolk Boys finished 4th overall!  Well done again to all our upcoming players!!
