Good Luck to our Volkswagen Scramble Team.  Our Scramble Team are away at the moment and are representing the Norfolk Island Golf Club at the Regional Final of the Volkswagen Scramble at Pelican Waters on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast tomorrow.

The course is looking very green and the grass is growing very fast.  It will keep the boys busy down there looking after the golf course!

Last Monday night the Golf Club hosted the visiting rugby teams on the Island at the moment.  They are the Bathurst Bulls and the Orange Emus and also a few local Creaky ol Convicts attended.  The food was great thanks to the girls at The Olive Branch and a great job by Cynthia for working the bar.

Competition Results

There were 40 players for The Olive Café Monthly Medal and Lisner Trophy RD 3 on Saturday, with a big thankyou to Naomi and Joanna for their sponsorships. 

The winner of the Lisner Trophy was Naomi Thompson with a nett 72 and Caroline Miratana in second place also with 72 nett but losing the count back.

The Olive Café competition and Men’s Monthly Medal was won by Mal Tarrant with a 68 nett, winning the count back from Sean Ellard in second also with 68 nett. Third was Dave Jeffreys 70 nett, fourth Chris Magri 72 nett and fifth Dylan Quintal-Christian 74 nett.

Friday afternoons continue to see plenty of players on the course and in the Club for the Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run and Junior Choc Run.  Brett Carr took out first place in the NI Mechanical Chook Run, and Tighe Judd had another good round to take out first place in the Junior Choc Run.

Life at the Golf Club quietened down this week after our very successful Veteran's Golf Tournament concluded, but there are still plenty of things happening around the Club.  The rain was certainly a blessing and great to see a little bit of green returning to our sun scorched fairways.

Members are reminded that the 2019 Eclectic commenced Sat Feb 2nd and if you feel birdies are going to be part of your game this year get your name and $5 to Steve Foster, our handicapper, who will ensure all your birdies are recorded (Saturday play only).

A special request from our course maintenance shed for the person who borrowed the Golf Clubs water blasters please return it immediately.

Our Annual Match Play Qualifying, a Stroke event was played last Saturday with the top 16 net scores making the list for the 2019 Match Play eliminations. If you made the top 16 please ensure you get your match played before the due dates which are all up on the Clubhouse Notice Board.

Dave Jeffreys won the day with a nett 67 from Danny Nobbs on nett 68 and Dave Magri nett 70 on a c/b to Eric Hutchinson.  Naomi Thompson had the best amongst the Ladies with 70 nett from Edie Christian 72 nett.

The Pro-Pin 4th went to Danny Nobbs [450cm], the All In 9/18th Jess Tierney [850cm], the Ladies 3rd shot to 2/11th Pat McCoy [17cm] & Men's 2nd shot to 1/10th Jared Magri [132cm].

Wednesday's Golfers had to contend with very blustery, windy conditions which challenged all players in the individual stableford and made it especially challenging for the Pro-Pin 4^th, with no one making the green.  A good sized field challenged the conditions with Jared Magri winning the day with 39 pt's from Alan Chrastacky 37 pt's and Pat McCoy 3rd on 35pt's.

Veteran's Golf had a better roll up this week. Ian [Hussa] Harris won the day on 17 pt's from Tony Scicluna 14 pt's. If you feel like a bit of extra exercise there is nothing more enjoyable than a relaxing game of golf with like minded friends, so come down next Tuesday 2.30pm for a 3pm tee off over 9 holes.

Friday afternoon saw another Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run and Junior Choc Run with a good field in both comps taking to the course.  Nate Magri took out first place in the Norfolk Mechanical Chook Run, congratulations Nate!  Asher Garden claimed first place in the Junior Choc Run, well done Asher!  Friday is another great afternoon on the course, and is a good opportunity for a very social afternoon of golf.  If you’re interested in joining in the fun, call Andrew in the Pro Shop 23603 for more information.

Everything is in place for another successful tournament next week with the 2019 Veteran's Golf Tournament beginning on Monday evening with a Welcome get together at the Club. Most of the contestants will be arriving this weekend, with matches beginning Tuesday morning.  As much as we would love some good rain, let's hope the weather stays kind to the players as well.

This Sunday the Golf Club is having a Fun Golf Day, a 9 hole 4 person Ambrose with a 'Rock & Roll' theme.  So dress up in your old rock & roll gear and get a team together and come down for a fun afternoon.  Following the golf there will be a Fish Fry meal provided by the South Pacific Games team to raise money for their up and coming trip away.  Get those old blue suede shoes out of the closet and come down for some fun, 1.30pm for a 2pm tee off.

It was another very good roll up of players last Saturday for Rd 2 of the "Olive Cafe" Monthly Medal and Lisner Trophy and 1st Rd of the 2019 "Olive Cup".  Once again a huge thanks to Naomi and Johanna for their generous and ongoing sponsorships.

If you have been down to the Golf Club lately for a refreshing drink or a sumptuous lunch from the "Olive Branch" you will have noticed just how dry everything is. The Golf Course is holding up reasonably well with a big thanks to Jason and Neil for their work as the greens staff under these tough conditions.

Competition Results:

As mentioned earlier an excellent field teed off for the "Olive Cafe" Monthly Medal & Lisner Trophy, and some very good cards were returned.  A reasonably new member, Jed Piper, showed us what he is made of with a great 61 nett to win the day easily from 3 players on 66 nett, Mal Tarrant in 2nd place on a c/b to Eric Hutchinson on a c/b to Mat McCaskie.

The Ladies also produced some good cards with Pat McCoy winning the Lisner Trophy with a 68 nett from Caroline Miratana 69 nett and Terry Gray in 3rd place 70 nett.

The Pro-Pin 4th went to Stephen [Cooky] Gardiner [100cm], the All-In 9/18th Beau Magri [220cm], the Ladies 3rd to 2/11th Caroline Miratana [75cm], and the Men’s 2nd shot to 7/16th Cameron Feldman [15cm].

The day also produced 2 Eagles, Mat McCaskie on the 3rd and Eric Hutchinson on the 15th. Well done both of you.

Wednesday's Golf had a big turn out with players arriving for next week's Veteran's Golf Tournament and members chasing bonus points for the "2 Drips" Ansbury Christian Cup. Judging by the results from the cards returned there will be quite a few recipients of Bonus points.  Naomi Thompson won the Ladies division with 39 pt's from Pat McCoy 35 pt's and Kerry Robertson 32 pt's. Arthur Keeping, playing good golf leading up to the Veteran's Tournament, won the Men's with 40 pt's from Bruce Lockhart 39 pt's and Beau Magri in 3rd place with 38 pt's. The Pro-Pin 4th went to Tane Cottle [204cm].

Social Golf News:

Veteran's had another small turn out last Tuesday with a few off Island and a couple with minor injuries, but new players are always welcome.  Kevin [Moonie] Christian won the day with 16 pt's. You don't need to be a geriatric to play Veteran's. You do not need to have a handicap, any age around 40 and upwards is most welcome, and so if you feel like a hit of 9 holes on a Tuesday afternoon come down about 2.30pm for a 3pm tee off and join in the fun.

Jared Magri took out first place in the Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run on Friday with an eagle on the 6^th hole contributing to his good score.  It was good to see another good field enjoying Friday afternoons on the course and on the verandah after golf.  There really is no better place for a Friday afternoon.

Our Juniors also took to the course on Friday afternoon, this week for a 2 person Ambrose for something a bit different.  It was a popular game, with almost everyone enjoying the change and challenge of playing with a partner and making decisions about their game.  The team of Liam Christian-Bailey and Cassie McCoy both played well to take out first place.  Well done to everyone who enjoyed a fun afternoon on the course.

Today's Golf is the Annual 'Coppertop Day' sponsored by a few gentlemen in the club with a lack of that curly stuff on top.  Always a popular event on our calendar, a 4 person Ambrose with each team required to have a female player and only one single figure marker.  Tee off times are 8.30am & 1pm and as usual players are asked to have their team cards into the match committee no later than 15 mins prior to tee off.  With many of the players here for the Veterans Tournament there will be a large field so please be early and ready to play. Where did January go? The day and months just get faster.  With the "Olive Cafe" Monthly Medal & Lisner Trophy upon us again today and the 2019 Veterans Tournament beginning next week this month is also going to whizz past us, and then it will be Easter!

We are all praying for rain to help the Golf course but more importantly put some water back in our tanks.  A big thanks to Jason and Neil for keeping the course in as good a condition as it is under extreme conditions.

The Annual Presentation Day is being held tomorrow (Sunday) lunch time at "Dino's Restaurant" Bomboras Rd, at 12.30pm.

Our Annual "Business House Day" was held on the Australia Day Public Holiday.  This is the day we give thanks to our very generous sponsors and it was pleasing to see another good turn out for the 4 person 9 Hole Ambrose.  Winning the day were the team of "Tierney Electrical" consisting of Brad Tierney, Kerry Robertson, Arty Keeping and Ali Clark with a score of 27.13 nett from NI Mechanical and the team of Dave Jeffreys, Paul Brown, Eric Hutchinson & Glenn Elder with 27.75 nett.  3rd place went to the team of Mal [Figgy] Rundle, Matt Kelly, Dylan Quintal-Christian & Taj Quintal on 28.31 nett.

Wednesday's golf, an Individual Stableford, produced some very good results thanks to another perfect summer’s day on the Golf Course.  Tane Cottle won the Ladies division with 38 pt's from Robyn Lockhart 34 pt's & Pat McCoy 33 pt's.  Some very good cards amongst the Men with Chris Magri winning the day with 44 pt's from Dave Jeffreys 41 pt's and Beau Magri in 3rd place with 40 pt's on a c/b to Mat McCaskie.  The Pro-Pin 4th went to Stephen [Cooky] Gardiner [400cm].

Veterans Golf was postponed due to most golfers out golfed over the weekend, a disease which creeps in to a golfer’s life at a certain age, and also several players off Island for the week. But most will be back for next week, refreshed.

The "Olive Cup" is done and dusted for another year and proved that consistency pays off, particularly when you carry the consistency through to the final and very last round.  Well done Stephen [Cooky] Gardiner, although not winning on the day, still had the points to emerge the winner.  This is proving to be a popular part of our golfing calendar, with points accumulated from all Saturday golf.  Another big thank you to Naomi for her generous sponsorship of this event.

While we could certainly do with a good dose of rain, the Golf Course is holding up well, the weather remains good and the Club keeps busy with visitors and locals alike enjoying our clubhouse facilities for golf and/or dining. And it is only going to get busier with The 2019 Veteran's Golf Tournament only 2 weeks away.

                                           Competition Results:

As mentioned earlier the “2018/19 Olive Cup" had the final Rd played out last Saturday with the top 8 remaining contenders competing for the prestigious trophy.  With points awarded depending how they finished the day, any one of the remaining 8 could have won but it all came down to consistency. Stephen [Cooky] Gardiner won the "Olive Cup" for 2018/19 with 180 pt's from a fast finishing Bruce Lockhart in 2nd place on 164 pt's and Pauly Browne 155 pt's in 3rd.

The deciding event, played amongst the rest of the field, was 'Loud Shirt' Day or otherwise known as Diesel's Day, an Individual Stableford.  Brooke Watson won the day with a much improved 42 pt's on a c/b to Lisle Snell and Andrew [Umi] Umlauft 40 pt's in 3rd on a c/b to Mal Tarrant.  Ruth McConnell won the Ladies division with 38 pt's on a c/b to Kerry Robertson and Ngaire Christian in 3rd on 37 pt's.

The Pro-Pin 4th went to Mal Tarrant [170cm], the All-In 9/18th Brad Tierney [459cm], the Ladies 3rd shot to 2/11th Kerry Robertson [50cm] and Men's 3rd shot to 5/14th Tony Scicluna [191cm].

The "Island Plumbing & Gas" Putt Off had another winner with Brad Tierney taking home the cash.  Thanks to Brad the Putt Off today will be worth $15.

Wednesday's Golf attracted another good Wednesday field and another perfect summer day for golf. Robyn Lockhart thought so and easily won the Ladies division with 39 pt's from Kerry Robertson 37pt's and Tane Cottle 34 pt's on a c/b to Edie Christian.  Kim Davies had the best in the Men's on 40 pt's on a c/b to Chris Magri on a c/b to Bruce Lockhart. The Pro-Pin 4th went to Eric Hutchinson [276cm].

On Monday night, the Golf Club had its Annual General Meeting and a good roll up of members ensured that all positions on the Board were able to be filled. The new Board for 2018/2019 are President Paul Kiernan, Secretary and Vice President Wayne Richards, Treasurer Belinda Grube, Men’s Captain David McCowan, Ladies Captain Pat McCoy, Course and Greens Arty Keeping and House and Social Kerry Robertson. Congratulations to the new Board and all the best for the next year.

At the AGM, it was passed that both membership fees and club competition fees be increased to keep in line with increasing costs. Annual membership for full members will be $375, social members $245, Overseas member $215 and Junior members $50. Competition fees will go up to $12 from this Saturday.

Competition Results

Saturday 22nd September was the third round of the Auricaria Building Contractors and Norfolk Island Pest Control Trophy, an individual stableford event very generously sponsored by Mal and Rae Tarrant and Duncan and Terry Gray.  Winning the day in the men’s section was Bruce Lockhart with 38 points from Jess Tierney, 36, Eric Hutchinson 35, Stephen Gardner 35 and Jared Magri, 33. Mal Tarrant also had a great 38 points but as he is the sponsor he couldn’t win his own event. He won a ball instead. Robyn Lockhart won the ladies with a great score of 41 points from Ngaire Christian on 34 on a countback from Terry Gray, who also got a ball. Nearest the pins were won by Bruce Lockhart on the 4^th at 172 cms, James Walden on the 9/18^th to 1940 cms, Kerry Robertson to 150 cms on the 2/11^th and Nathan Walden to 130 cms on the 8/17^th. Putt off continues to jackpot and will be $420 this week.

Wednesdays golf was an individual stableford event. Winning the day in the ladies was Honi Wilson with 35 points. Honi also won the nearest the pin on the 4^th with a shot to 4.3 metres. David McCowan won the men’s with a solid 40 points from Kim Davies on 38 and Mat McCaskie on 36 points.

Saturdays Golf is very popular annual Foodland Day, an Individual Stableford event. Tee off times are 8-30am and 12-30 pm and all players are reminded that cards must be in at least 15 minutes beforehand. All golfers with an official handicap are most welcome.

Wednesdays golf is an individual stableford event with bonus points for the Ansbury Christian Cup and tee off time is 1 pm.

Friday is NI Mechanical Chook run, a fun 9 hole comp, tee off anytime plus the Junior choc run for juniors over 4 holes.

Every Tuesday afternoon at 2-30 pm is Veterans Golf, a 9 hole event.

Our club is open Monday to Saturday from 11 am and Sundays from 12 pm. Come down and enjoy a lovely lunch or nibbles from the Olive Branch from 11 am to 5 pm.

On Saturday, the 6h October we will be reverting to our summer tee off time of 1 pm.

Things continue to be busy at the golf club, with regular competitions and the start of the Club Championship season. Numbers continue to be good which is very pleasing to see.

Please don’t forget the Annual General Meeting at 7 pm on Monday night. We need a quorum of 20 to ensure we can successfully elect a new committee and to approve any business that may arise. We are still looking for nominations for a few positions.

Competition Results

Saturday 15^th September was the annual Accredited Pest Control Day, a four ball best ball event very generously sponsored by Ron and Michelle Van Gorph. All reports have been that it was a great day and evening. Winning the day was the team of Shane Evans and Hayley Evans with 47 points followed by Tony Scicluna and Mal Rundell, 44, Aidon Bruce and James Walden, 43, Luke McLeod and Danny Nobbs, 43 and Brooke Watson and Fred Howe, 43. Country Rovers were Arty Keeping and Alistair Clarke with 35 points. Nearest the pins were won by Gary Cooper on the 4^th at 372 cms, Bruce Lockhart to 566 cms on the 9/18^th, Robyn Lockhart to 281 cms on the 2/11^th and Danny Nobbs to 10 metres on the 8/17^th. Putt off continues to jackpot and will be $405 this week.

On Sunday, the Mixed Foursomes, the first of our Club Championships was played. The morning round was won by Robyn Lockhart and Eric Hutchinson with a nett  69 from Liat Baddock and Tony Scicluna with 71.5. Ngaire Christian took out the nearest the pin with a shot to 11 metres. Some very hot golf was played in the afternoon with Ngaire Christian and Brad Tierney winning with a nett 64 from Edie Christian and Jason McCoy on 65. Mal Tarrant took out the NTP with a shot to 246 cm. Tommy Greenwood and Caroline Miratana had a very good eagle on the 2^nd.  The 2018 Mixed Foursome Champions are:

Wednesdays golf was Dino’s Day, a two person Aggregate Stableford event, very kindly sponsored by Dino’s restaurant. Winning the day was the formidable team of David McCowan and Cameron Feldman with 76 points from Paul (Shorty) Kiernan and Julian Tresch with 72 and Tony Scicluna and Dave Jeffries with 71 points.  Jess and Brad Tierney took out the country rover prize with a measley 55 points. Nearest the pin was won by Tony Scicluna with a shot to 158 cms.

It has been encouraging to see our playing numbers on the increase recently and with the winter weather being exceptional and Golf Course in such good condition all looks good going forward. With the 2018 Hardys Wines Pro Am Golf Classic beginning this weekend the Golf Club is going to be a very busy place for the next week and the course will not be open for social play until Friday 31^st.

With the "Araucaria Building Contractors & N I Pest Control” Trophy, Rd 2,  played last Saturday also produced a very good roll up of players. We thank our sponsors Mal & Rae Tarrant and Duncan & Terry Gray for their generous and ongoing sponsorship.

Beginning with the Pro-Am tomorrow, Sunday, followed by the BC Excavations Professional Knockout, with 1st Rd of the tournament Monday morning through to the 4th and final Rd Thursday there will be a lot of golf to view from or Clubhouse veranda.

Competition Results:

The "Araucaria Building Contractors & N I Pest Control " Trophy, Rd 2, an Individual Stableford, started the morning with a very dismal wet weather scene with only a very few arriving to play, but by midday it was a totally different picture and eventually a very strong field played out the afternoon in fine sunny conditions.

Winning the day with solid return to form was Richie Cottle with an excellent 47pt's from the ever improving Dave Jeffreys on 46pt's and visitor, Marc Collyer with 45pt's.  Honi Wilson, another showing continual improvement and always amongst the place getters of late had the best of the Ladies with 35pt's from Tane Cottle 34pt's.

The Pro-Pin 4th went to Cameron Feldman [200cm], the All-In 9/18th Honi Wilson [76cm], the Ladies 2nd shot to 6/15th Michelle Collyer [426cm] and  the Men's 2nd shot to 1/10th Shane Evans [205cm].

The "Island Plumbing & Gas" Putt Off continues on its way upwards and today will be worth $345.

“Dino’s Day " returned to our golfing calendar with a 2 Person Aggregate Stableford, and another very good field supporting the event and our sponsors, Dean & Helen Bosley and many thanks for your generous and ongoing sponsorship. Richie Cottle, after an excellent result on Saturday made comment that maybe his normal playing partners, absent on that day, could be holding him back from better golf but teaming up with Paul [Shorty] Kiernan won the day with 74 pt's? 2nd place went to Kim Davies & Barry [Marbles] Soley on 74pt's on a c/b from Steve Foster & Dave McCowan in 3rd place. The Pro-Pin 4th went to Gary McConnell [245cm].

Social Golf News:

Veteran’s Golf attracted another very good field to enjoy an afternoon on the golf course with like minded golf tragics.  Tony Scicluna won the day with 16pt's from visitor Marc Collyer 15pt's and wife Michelle on 14pt's. There will be no Veteran's Golf next Tuesday due to the ‘The Classic’.

Friday afternoon saw another big Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run and Junior Choc Run with big fields in both sections making for a great afternoon.  Unfortunately results weren’t available at the time of publication, but we will post the winners in next week’s golf report.

What's on this Week:

Today's Golf is a 4BBB stableford with choice of partner and choice of group.  Tee of times are 8.30am & 12.30pm and players are asked to have their cards into the match committee no later than 15 mins prior to tee off.  With the beginning of the "Hardys Wines Pro-Am Golf Classic” upon us there is expected to be a large field for today and all players to be ready to play and consider at all times the speed of play. Any visiting golfers with an official club handicap are welcome to come down and play on Saturday.

Following 'The Classic' the Olive Branch will return to their normal opening hours 11am - 5pm from Monday to Saturday.

What a great turn out for "Pete's Place Day" last Saturday and another good weather day.  A big thanks to Peter Woodward and staff for their ongoing support and sponsorship over the past years.  All our sponsors are so much appreciated and it is they that help keep the spirit and enjoyment up for the Golf Club members.

The “Olive Branch" kitchen continues to attract a large number of customers, both visitors to the Island and locals, enjoying the food and the panoramic scenery from our Veranda.  Everyone is always welcome!

Competition Results:

One of our long standing sponsors, "Pete’s Place" did not disappoint again this year with a great range of trophies for all the place getters.  Blake O'Hara won the day with a very good 42 pt's with Steve Foster coming in 2nd place on 41 pt's and Arthur [Arty] Keeping in 3rd place with 40 pt's on a c/b to Jason McCoy. Pat McCoy, with 41 pt's also, had the best of the Ladies from Ngaire Christian 40 pt's on a c/b to Honi Wilson in 3rd place.

The Pro-Pin 4th went to Caroline Miratana and almost taking the Jackpot [51cm ], the All-In 9/18th Jess Tierney [680cm], the Ladies 2nd shot to 6/15th Belinda Grube [170cm] and the Men's 2nd shot to 2/11th Blake O'Hara [320cm].

The “Island Plumbing & Gas" Putt Off has grown to $330. If you put a card in today and you are in the Club for presentations you have a chance to win that. So why not?

Wednesday's golf once again had some very good scores coming in. An Individual Stableford, with that prolific place getter lately, Kerry Robertson winning the Ladies with 39 pt's from Honi Wilson, also a regular amongst the places lately, in 2nd place on a c/b also with 39 pt's.  Ben Richards won the Men's with a superb 44 pt's from Richie Cottle 43 pt's on another c/b to Arthur [Arty] Keeping. The Pro-Pin 4th went to Cameron Feldman [295cm].

Social Golf News:

Veteran's Golf, once again attracted a record number of players. Brooke Watson cleaned up easily with 20 pt's from visitor Mark Coylon in 2nd with 17 pt's and our oldest golf tragic Lou Evans in 3rd place with 16 pt's. Our tee of time is going to remain in the meantime at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start. Come down Tuesday afternoon and enjoy a casual 9 holes with like minded golfers.

The Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run attracted another good field on Friday with some great scores and as always good times on the veranda afterwards.  Congratulations to Brett Carr who took out first place this week.

The Junior Choc Run continues to attract plenty of players also with 17 keen junior golfers taking to the course.  Congratulations to Taj Quintal, who continued his winning form to once again take out first place.
