Another enjoyable week of golf passed by as does the weather with that heavy rain we all experienced last Sunday.  A blessing by any standards, topping up our tanks, watering our gardens and freshening up the Golf Course for all of us to enjoy.

Once again, we must mention our sponsors who make our golfing program more enjoyable for all of us, and this week it is Frazer and Teresa from Norfolk Forwarding for their day last Saturday, and Helen & Dean Bosley for their day last Wednesday.  A big thank you to all our sponsors.

The “Olive Branch” kitchen in our Club continues to attract good crowds enjoying the excellent food served and also enjoying the panoramic views from our clubhouse veranda.

Club championships begin next weekend so if you have not already put your name up to play it is not too late. You have to be in to win.

Competition Results:

Last Saturday Rd 4 of the Norfolk Forwarding Trophy for this month was played.  Once again, some very good cards returned with Eric Hutchinson winning the day with 40 pt’s from visitor Greg Beyer on a c/b to Shane Evans both with 39 pt’s.

In the Ladies division, Hawaiian holidays seem to improve the golf with Caroline Miratana, fresh back from holidays winning the Ladies division with an excellent 41 pt’s from fellow holiday maker Naomi Thompson 34 pt’s and Tane Cottle in 3^rd place on 33 pt’s on a c/b to Pat McCoy.

The Pro Pin 4^th went to Fred Howe [135cm], the All In 9/18^th James Walden [240cm], the Ladies 3^rd shot to 1/10^th Tane Cottle [295cm] and the Mens 2nd shot to 6/15^th Cameron Feldman [125cm].

The “Island Plumbing & Gas” Putt Off remains intact for another week and today will be worth $150.

Wednesday’s Golf “Dino’s Day” a 2person Aggregate Stableford attracted a good number attempting to win an enjoyable evening at “Dino’s Restaurant”. Sean Ellard & Kevin [Moonie] Christian teamed well together to easily win the day with 78 pt’s from Brad & Jess Tierney 73 pt’s on a c/b to Andrew [Umi] Umlauft & Dean Bosley.  Tony Scicluna won the Pro Pin 4^th [629cm].

Social Golf News:

Veterans Golf had a good roll up last week enjoying the company of fellow social golfers for the exercise and fresh air and good company that 9 holes of social golf can bring. Kevin [Moonie] Christian won the day with 18 pt’s from Tony Scicluna 15 pt’s.

Friday afternoon’s weather wasn’t overly enticing.  We didn’t have any juniors in the Junior Choc Run, and only a very small field for the Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run.  Dave Jeffreys took out first place in the chook run for those braving the conditions.  The rain was welcomed though heading into summer and we look forward to many long Friday afternoons on the course.

A lot quieter down at the Golf Club this week as things return to normal after a big week, following another very successful “Hardys Wines” Pro-Am Golf Classic. And judging by the comments from many of the contestants from the Mainland, most will be back again next year.

What a difference a week makes. How blessed Andrew & Kylie and fellow golf club members where with the weather over the period of the tournament, as conditions have certainly changed since.

Our normal golf fixtures continued on last Saturday with the “Accredited Pest Control” Day and we send a big thanks to Ron & Michel Van Gorph for their years of sponsorship, with the news that this will be their last as they have sold the business to fellow member Pauly Browne. We thank Ron & Michele for their generous sponsorship over many years and wish Pauly every success moving forward.

Members are reminded that the A.G.M will be held on Monday 16^th September at 7pm. All positions are open for nominations and must be lodged with the Club Secretary 7 days prior to the meeting.

As mentioned earlier, how different a week makes in weather as things changed last Saturday for the “Accredited Pest Control” Day, a 4 BBB Stableford. The weather had a big effect on morning to afternoon play with the last hour of play copping a big spill.  Eric Hutchinson & Kerry Robertson won the day with 44 pt’s on a c/b to Gary McConnell & Shane [Snapper] Blanch on a c/b to Fred Howe & Eric Sweeney.

The Pro-Pin 4^th went to Mitchell Smith [56cm], the All-In 9/18^th Kealan Tierney [252cm], the Ladies 3^rd shot to 2/11^th Kerry Robertson [73cm], and the Men’s 2^nd shot to 8/17^th Dominic Falk [30cm].

The “Island Plumbing & Gas” Putt Off begins its regrowth and today will be worth $45.

Wednesday’s Golf, as on previous days, was affected by the weather determining the size of the field and the results.  Play of the day was the “2 Drips” Individual Stableford with bonus pts toward the Ansbury Christian Trophy.  Pauly Browne won the day with 38 pt’s, very good considering the appalling conditions of some sunshine, lots of wind and rain all afternoon . Stephen [Cooky] Gardiner came in 2^nd place on 36 pt’s and Ben Richards in 3rd on 35 pt’s. Kerry Robertson had the best in the Ladies division with 27 pt’s from Teresa Cook 23 pt’s. The Pro-Pin 4^th was not struck.

Social Golf News:

Veterans Golf had an enjoyable afternoon of golf until the rain arrived for the final 40mins of play. But most carried on playing with Brooke Watson winning the day with 17 pt’s from Kevin [Moonie] Christian in 2^nd place on a c/b to Rory Brennan both on 15pt’s.

There was no Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run or Junior Choc Run last Friday due to the Classic. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the course this week though for a fun Friday afternoon. Remember, everyone is always welcome!

Another great week at the Golf Course this week, with the running of the 2019 “Hardys Wines” Pro-Am Golf Classic.  The weather has been perfect for all 4 days. Another Professionally organized tournament by Andrew and Kylie Umlauft and judging by the happy faces of all the competitors all will be back for another crack at it next year.  Great to see so many faces from years gone by back again. With a full field of 144 players participating some great golf was experienced by players and spectators alike.  Naomi and her “Olive Branch” kitchen staff have done a great job of keeping everybody fed with good local food. The Golf Course has been maintained in great condition by Jason and Neil and well done to both of you.  A big thank you to all players, who stopped play on Wednesday afternoon during the funeral, with respect to the Randall family. A Tradition of respect that we have on Norfolk Island. The Presentation & Dinner evening was held last night at the Paradise Hotel and all results from the week of Golf will be found elsewhere in this issue.

Last Saturday the “Administrators Cup” Rd 1 was the play of the day, a 2-person Aggregate Stableford.  A big thank you to Eric Hutchinson for his generous sponsorship of this event. Caroline Miratana & Dave Magri combined well to win the day with 74 pt’s on a c/b to Fred Howe & Eric Sweeney. Fintan & Kealan Tierney came in 3^rd place with 70pt’s on a c/b to Danny & Jeht Nobbs on a c/b to Sean Ellard & Shane Evans.

The Pro-Pin 4^th went to Richard Lee, the Ladies 3^rd shot to 7/16^th Belinda Grube, the Men’s 2^nd shot to 8/17^th James Rogers [an Eagle] & the All-In 9/18^th Glen Kelly.

There was no “Island Plumbing & Gas” Putt Off due to the Welcome Party commencing at the Castaway Hotel and everybody wanting to get away for that. Today it will be worth $30.

With the Hardys Wines Pro-Am Golf Classic on during the week there has been no other Golf played to report on.

Today’s Golf is the “Accredited Pest Control” Day, a 4 BBB Stableford event with choice of partners. Tee Off times 8.30am & 12.30pm. You will be all able to have a sleep in today after all the early starts during the week. Players are asked to have their cards into match committee no later than 15 mins prior to tee off. With many players still around after the Classic, it should be a large field, so even more important to have cards in early. A phone call to the Pro Shop is all that is required to get your card in early. Any visiting golfers with an official club handicap are always welcome to come down and play.

The “Araucaria Building Contractors” and “NI Pest Control” Trophy Rd 2 was played last Saturday on another fine winters day and the golf represented the weather with some excellent results coming in.  A big thanks to Rae and Mal & Terry and Duncan for their generous and much appreciated sponsorship.

Captain Bruce announced that Meg Wills had confirmed her continuing sponsorship of her memorial to her late husband Kev and we thank her for that.  All our sponsors are much appreciated and valuable to the running of our club competitions week in and week out.

We welcomed back on Saturday Pauly Browne and Melissa Neil our Club Operations Manager, from their trip to Ireland, and whilst away Pauly & Melissa announced their engagement.  We wish them well and all the very best going forward in life.

As mentioned last week the “Hardys Wines” Pro–Am Golf Classic is now only 3 weeks away and the amount of fairway divots and pitch marks on greens is not acceptable. It is our responsibility to carry a bucket of sand and repair all divots, whether yours or somebody else’s, it is not that hard.  Have pride in your Golf Course, that is paramount in keeping the course in pristine condition for the biggest tournament of the year.

Once again many thanks to those who are repairing their divots and pitch marks. It is most appreciated by our course and greens staff.

As mentioned earlier Rd 2 of the “Araucaria Building Contractors & NI Pest Control” Trophy was the play of the day last Saturday with the afternoon players having the best of conditions as the scores showed, with all pm players amongst the place getters. Stephen [Cooky] Gardiner had a blinder with 43 pt’s but only just from Jared Magri with another excellent result on 42 pt’s and Bruce Lockhart in 3^rd place 41 pt’s, but only after a 3way c/b between Fred Howe and Cameron Feldman.  Pat McCoy had the best amongst the Ladies with 37 pt’s from Robyn Lockhart 35 pt’s.

The Pro-Pin 4^th went to Cameron Feldman [100cm], the All-In 9/18^th Aidan Bruce [405cm], the Ladies 3^rd shot to 8/17^th Edie Christian [167cm] and the Men’s 2^nd shot to 6/15^th Jess Tierney [168cm].

Wednesday’s Golf had a complete change in weather conditions from Saturday with a cold blustery breeze and the odd shower, and play being Stroke & Putting, thrown in just for good measure with the clubhouse a welcome sight after a cool 18 holes of golf.  But the weather did

not bother one player with Arthur [Arty] Keeping turning in a superb card with a Gross 80, nett 62.  Well done Arty for such a fine effort for such an ordinary day.  Arty is like Scotch Whisky or Red Wine, he just improves with age.  Stephen [Cooky] Gardiner was a distant 2^nd with a 72 nett from Paul Porter 73 nett.  Pat McCoy once again had the best in the Ladies division with a 75 nett from Edie Christian 77 nett. The Pro-Pin 4^th was not struck.  And just to make it his day Arty won the putting with 23 putts, another fine effort.

Social Golf News:

A slightly smaller roll up from last Tuesday but still an enjoyable 9 holes of social golf with like minded friends.  You can join us too on a Tuesday at 2.30pm for a relaxing 9 holes of golf, no handicap required and age is not relevant even though we call ourselves Veterans. That is only so we can act our age.

Friday saw a very good field for the Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run and Junior Choc Run.  Brett Carr took out first place in the Chook Run, well done Brett.  Lachie McCoy was the winner in the juniors, well done also to Lachie.  Keep enjoying your golf!

The Club Administration is pleased to announce our new electronic processing of player cards and statistics is moving ahead well and with donations towards the cost flowing in from members. Thank you all for the support so far. We have a specialist technician arriving on Island next week to begin installation and training for match committee members. Startup date should be early July.

Wednesday’s Golf, a Stroke and Putting had a slight weather change from our normal sunny days of late with a fresh south-easter blowing across the course, but a good size field braved the conditions.  Robyn Lockhart won the Ladies Division with 75.25 nett from Pat McCoy 76.33. Chris Magri had the best amongst the Men’s with a 69 nett from Arthur [Arty] Keeping 71 nett on a c/b to Dave Jeffreys.  Arty also claimed the Putting with another master display of 26 putts. The Pro-Pin 4^th went to Sean Ellard [298cm].

Social Golf News:

Veteran’s Golf had the usual tragics turn up on Tuesday for an enjoyable walk around our beautiful golf course, but did we do it justice, absolutely no.  The beer sure tasted good afterwards though. Ian [Hussa] Harris had the best of an ordinary 9 holes with 15 pt’s. The rest are not worth mentioning. Whilst we call ourselves Veterans we are just another social golf group who enjoy a relaxing 9 holes of golf on a Tuesday afternoon with fellow golfers for the friendship and companionship that golfing brings to us. So, come down next Tuesday 2pm for a 2.30pm tee off and enjoy the fun.

We were back into golf again this week after a short break.  All golfers that played this weekend had the privilege of playing in a 2 day competition supported by great local sponsors.

An unusual week for the Golf Club with no golf due to funerals, with the greatest of respect and our condolences to the Smith family on Friday, the Partridge family on Saturday, the South family on Sunday and The Yager family on Wednesday.

Today we have a dual sponsored event with the “Olive Café” Monthly Medal and Lisner Trophy combined with the 1^st Rd of the “Castaway Hotel” Bounty Open, played over today and tomorrow, Sunday.  As always we thank our generous sponsors, Naomi & Johanna for the Olive Café Monthly Medal & Lisner Trophy, and Tony and Sarah for the Castaway Hotel Bounty Tournament.

Last night we all enjoyed a ‘Welcome’ gathering at the Castaway Hotel as a forerunner to the beginning of the Castaway Bounty Tournament today. A big thanks to Tony and Sarah for their generous hospitality and tasty nibbles.

Donations sought:

The Golf Club is looking at a new golf program to run our weekly competitions. The program will print the cards with the name, handicap & sponsor in the Pro Shop when you pay your comp fee.

After the game when all scores are entered the program will check all cards, do count backs & display the scores in order on the TV screen. This will eliminate the match committee from having to manually check the cards. The handicap will also be updated saving the handicapper from having to do it manually.

The cost of installing the software & purchase of the hardware is substantial. This program will bring us in line with mainland golf club programs.

A number of members have already donated some funds towards this cost.

Veteran’s Golf had a small turn out with the weather threatening, as it did and gave those who played a soaking. But that’s golf, at least for some who braved it. So, no result was recorded.

The Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run and Junior Choc Run were cancelled out of respect to the Smith Family.

Another successful weekend of Golf with the “NIO” Easter Tournament played last weekend. The weather was perfect, the player numbers were great and the weekend capped off with a superb Fish Fry dinner followed by a Disco for those who still had some energy left in their body. The team travelling to the South Pacific games would have been happy with their effort and the numbers who turned up to enjoy the Fish Fry dinner.  We wish them all the luck in their efforts in Samoa.  And once again a big thanks to Terence [Tet] Grube and the staff at NIO for their generous sponsorship and support, and it was great  to have you down at the Club Sunday night to present the trophies to the winners.

The Clubrooms are slowly returning to some form of reality with painting still continuing but still functional, with the popular “Olive Branch” kitchen attracting plenty of happy customers and the great view from our veranda enjoying this great weather and food.

                                              Competition Results:

The “NIO” Easter Tournament Rd 1, a Stroke/Stableford event, began on Saturday in perfect conditions. Sean Ellard won the day with a very good 40 pt’s from Danny Nobbs 39 pt’s and Eric Sweeney 37 pt’s. Caroline Miratana had the best in the Ladies division with 37 pt’s from Kerry Robertson 35 pt’s.   The Pro Pin 4^th went to Murray Devantier [48cm’s] plus the Jackpot. The All-In 9/18^th Chris Magri [286cm], the Ladies 3^rd shot to 5^{th /14th}  Honi Wilson [76cm] & Mens 2^nd shot to 1/10^th Jared Magri [296cm].

Once again the “Island Plumbing & Gas” Putt Off remains and today will be worth $150.

The “NIO “Easter Tournament Rd 2 continued Sunday in similar conditions. Wayne Richards had the best in the Men’s division with 38 pt’s on a c/b to Sean Ellard [again] and Mat Kelly in 3^rd place 37 pt’s on a c/b to Andrew [Umi] Umlauft.  Naomi Thompson had the best in the Ladies with 37 pt’s from Kerry Robertson 36 pt’s.   The Pro Pin 4^th went to Mat McCaskie [271cm], the All-In 9/18^th Murray Devantier [530cm], the Ladies 2^nd shot to 7/16^th Caroline Miratana [320cm] and the Men’s 2^nd shot to 6/15^th  Nathan Walden [161cm].

Wednesday’s golf had another good turnout of players and great weather again. It was “Port for Mort” Day, a memorial for a late member, Mort Rutledge.  An Individual Stableford, the event for the day and Kerry Robertson had the best in the Ladies division with 32 pt’s from Edie Christian on a c/b.  Stephen [Cooky] Gardiner won the Mens division with 38 pt’s from Ben Richards 37 pt’s on a 4 way c/b from Richie Cottle, Paul [Shorty] Kiernan & Dave Jeffreys.  The Pro-Pin 4^th went to Kerry Robertson [289cm].

Squirrel’s back at the desk and what has happened during my absent. The heavens have opened up and delivered us some excellent rain turning the golf course into a blaze of green. With the warm sunshine that followed probably not the best for our greens staff who have had to keep up with amount of grass that followed on. But the course certainly looks a lot healthier.

But that’s not all, the Clubhouse had to be closed for urgent repairs forcing our members to a make shift tent /clubrooms.

But wait, that’s not all, no ships able to unload precious cargo in particular our liquor stocks, so alas we are almost an “An Island with no Beer”.  But fortunately the club spirit still exists with members making the most of the minor hick ups to our, after golf, social life.  Hopefully within a couple of weeks all will back to normal.  Big thanks to our staff who have had to endure unusual work conditions, and to our members who respect the unusual situation that we have found ourselves in.

A big thanks to Mal for keeping the news flowing in my absence.

Players are reminded that today, Saturday, is the return to winter tee off times for Saturday’s play only, 12.30pm.

Competition Results:

The Annual “Country of Origin” was played last Saturday with teams from Australia, New Zealand & Norfolk Island competing for the honor in an Individual Stableford format.  Australia were able to field 31  players to win the day with an average of  31.53 pt’s from New Zealand  8 players and an average of 31.126 pts and Norfolk Island 9 players and 26.6 pt’s.

For the Individual Stableford play of the day Eric Hutchinson won the day with 39 pt’s from Arthur [Arty] Keeping 36 pt’s on a c/b to Tony Scicluna . Honi Wilson had the best in the Ladies division with 39 pt’s from Jade Umlauft putting in her 3^rd  h/cp card on 34 pt’s.

The Pro Pin 4^th went to Mat McCaskie [208cm], the All In 9/18^th  Lisle Snell . Both the Ladies 2^nd shot to 6/15^th and the Men’s 2^nd shot to 1/10^th were not struck.

The “Island Plumbing & Gas” Putt Off remains intact after being contested on an unusual putting situation, the 9^th green adjacent to the Tent / clubrooms, and today will be worth $150.

Wednesday’s Golf, the “2 Drips” Individual Stableford with bonus pt’s toward the Ansbury Christian Cup was our first day back into our clubhouse, and whilst the painting is not quite complete it was good to be back inside. The bar stocks still a little low but we are making do.

Pat McCoy won the Ladies division with 32pt’s, from Honi Wilson 30pt’s. That man again, Paul Browne, keeps winning and improving, even with a lower handicap, and won the day with 40pt’s from Alan Chrastecky 39pt’s and Dave Jeffreys 38pt’s. The Pro-Pin 4^th went to Julian Tresch [390cm].

                                                   Social Golf News:

Veteran’s attracted a small field possibly because of the situation with our clubrooms and bar facilities. But I am sure once those impediments are overcome all will be back to normal. Two keen golfers from the mainland, Coralie from Randwick and Karen from Adelaide enjoyed 9 holes with two of our members Steve and Bob.

Friday golf managed to roll with the punches and it was another good field for the Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run and junior choc run.  Dylan Quintal-Christian took our first place in the chook run, while Tighe Judd took out first place in the juniors.  Congratulations to Dylan and Tighe. 

Don’t forget that everyone is welcome to join in our social competitions on Tuesday and Friday.

Social Golf News

A wet Friday afternoon didn’t stop our regular chook runners taking to the course and enjoying a fun afternoon following.  A slight disruption with the Club closed, and a heavy shower going through, but otherwise it was business as usual.  

Tim Pulsford took out first place in the Norfolk Island Mechanical Chook Run, and Vinnie Martinovich took out first place in the junior choc run.  Congratulations Tim and Vinnie.

Everyone is always welcome to join in the fun at the Club on a Friday afternoon. 

A reminder to parents of the Junior Choc Run, that supervision is required for the comp to operate, so please be sure to have your turn walking around with a group to enable the kids to be safe and enjoy the game.  Enquiries to Andrew in the Pro Shop 23603.
