Government House Charity ‘Open days’ for period July 2018 to June 2019

Friday, May 04, 2018

Norfolk Island’s historic Government House - built in 1829 and handsomely restored - is generally not open to the public. However, on a number of occasions each year, its formal rooms are open for the afternoon - 1.00 pm to 3.30 pm - for public inspection.

This is to allow opportunities for people to visit and gain an appreciation of Government House’s place in the rich history of Norfolk Island as well as to raise funds for Norfolk Island’s volunteer charity and service organisations.

The Government House Open Day program is subject to the possibility that scheduled Open Days may be cancelled or changed at short notice because of operational requirements or bad weather such as when it is wet or windy. Visitors must be advised of this fact.

The Government House Open Day Program         will be reviewed at the end of the 2019/2020 financial year.

The program for community organisations which will benefit from the entry charge of $15 per adult (children under 15 years of age, and accompanied by an adult, are free) is as follows:-

Banyan Park News

Thursday, May 03, 2018

It’s hard to believe that Term 2 is underway and we’re a quarter of the way through the school year!

The kids at Banyan had a great start with lots of interesting out-door and indoor play-based activities! All the ‘new’ 3 year olds are settling in really well as they get used to our daily routines like reading circles, morning tea, lunch and quiet rest time of an afternoon.

Welcome to all the new families over the last few months who are now part of the Banyan Park community.

AGM

We held our AGM in March which was relatively well attended.

Thank you to all those who attended and put their hands up to be part of the team. The Banyan Park Committee for 2018: Claire Quintal (President), Angie Andresen (Vice), Carrie Mietzel (Secretary), Brigette Graham (Treasurer), Jessica Rutledge (Assist. Treasurer); Sarah Quintal, Crystal Fell, Heather Bruce, Olivia Cooper, Leslie Buffett, Maria Christian, Sarah Robinson.

New Director

In Term 1 we undertook a recruitment process to fill the role of Director at Banyan Park. We received many strong applications for the position, and are very happy to announce the appointment of Emma Cullen to the position of Director.

Emma is leaving her role as Director of Abbotsford Long Day Care Centre in Sydney, NSW (a role she has held for the past six years), to come and work with us at Banyan Park. She first started working in the sector in 1996, and her qualifications include a Bachelor of Education (first class Honours), Master of Educational Leadership in Early Childhood Education, and most recently, a Graduate Certificate in Autism. Emma is also highly awarded, having received – among other accolades – the ‘Who’s Who of Australian Women’ award in 2010 for outstanding contribution to education in Australia. We know she will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Banyan Park, and we feel lucky to have her on board at Banyan as the centre continues to strive towards meeting accreditation requirements and the National Quality Standard for early childhood education..

Due to Emma's extended tenure in her current role, she has 12-week notice period and will join us at the beginning of Term 3. Thank you to the recruitment team who undertook a thorough recruitment process to secure such a quality candidate.

Term 2 interim Director

While we wait for Emma, we are excited to have secured an excellent interim Director for term 2, Marcus Cooper! Marcus, his wife Mandy, and their three children have temporarily relocated to Norfolk from Crescent Head in NSW where Marcus is the teacher at the community preschool.

Marcus has worked in the early childhood industry for 17 years, he has a Bachelor in Early Childhood, and experience as a relief centre director. With passions such as surfing and spending time at the beach with his family, we know Marcus will fit in well to life on Norfolk! He also has strong family friend connections on the island, and can’t wait to explore Norfolk and get to know its wonderful children and their families.

Thanks again to Katherine Lance, our outgoing Director for your care and love for the kids throughout your time at Banyan. Good luck from orl aklan in your new family day care venture!

Vacation Care

Banyan again offered care to children ages 3-8 years during the term break. Vinnie, Emily, Tilly and Eloise were a wonderful team – thanks yoryle for your dedication and enthusiasm! The kids had an absolutely ball, and despite the weather getting in the way of a few plans, rave reviews will ensure parents are well and truly pestered into sending them again next hols! If you’re interested in vacation care for your family, contact the centre ph.22415.

New Pirate Ship!

Banyan Park was lucky enough to secure the famous Burrell Pirate Ship from Wendy, Dean and Luca Burrell during the holidays. The awesome ship was collected from Rocky Point, delivered to Banyan and dropped into place last week by Charles Christian-Bailey – a HUGE Thankyou to Christian Bailey Agencies for the donation of your time and vehicle – we couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks also to Jimmy Quintal for some ongoing modifications to make it safer for the littler kids!

To say the kids were excited about the new addition when they came back on Tuesday, is about the biggest understatement we could make :-)

Building Better Regions Fund – New Centre Planning & Construction

Our development application for the new centre is still underway, and we’re awaiting detailed drawings and specification from our architect which will inform our tender process. We hope to release information about the tenders in the next month.

Thank you to the community from everyone at Banyan Park, for your ongoing support of the Centre!
